Chapter I

Fear not the storm

There are times when I close my eyes and I consider the possibility that when I open them again everything will be okay, we’ll be okay. I consider all this, but I know it’s not possible at all. Nothing will change. But I’ll keep trying, keep fighting. I’ll close my eyes with death bidding me a goodnight and open them once more to death greeting me a good morning. Still, there in a corner of my mind, I’ll keep a secret hope. For if we don’t live our lives in hope we’ll only die in despair… And there is no way I’ll ever do that.

The echoes of heavy, booted footsteps resounded over and over upon the cracked, stone-studded dirt road, calling for no attention and hoping not to draw any.

“Hmph! Almost forgot what a dump this place is.” Hex muttered to himself, disdainfully eyeing the rows of tattered, weather-beaten little houses which lined the road he walked. The worn faces of each......
