TCP/IP Half Open Connection
Since there is much discussion about this topic, I felt it important to post some very basic information about this, and most of all, explain why you DONT need to patch your tcpip.sys file to use torrents.
Beginning with Windows XP sp2, all windows versions have had built into their tcpip.sys file a limiter that restricts a large number of tcp connections being opened at the same moment. This is actually a good thing, and won't create a problem for you using BitComet.
BitComet does include a patch users can install, but unless you are an expert computer user, and have a specific reason for wanting to do this, then it is a very bad idea that you do so. I've discussed this with BitComet development team, and they are considering if they should keep this patch as part of bitcomet software, and have given me their permission, and their blessing to post this warning.
The reason Microsoft imposed this limit was because Nasty programs like "Worms" and other viruses are spread over the internet by infected computers that send out thousands of connection attempts to random IP addresses every second, and by limiting this to 10 connections, it helps slow down the spread until your anti virus can detect the virus, and shut it down.
Having this limit in place does NOT mean you can only have 10 "half open" connections (connection attempts), it only means that 10 can be made in a "1 second" interval, and another 10 during the next second, and so on.
With bittorrent file sharing, the average user will want no more then 100-200 connections on a torrent, and at this rate, it would take far less then one minute to achieve this number, infact, reaching 1000 or more connections could be done within one minute without......
