I guess starting a new thread is one way of removing the negative comments fom your blog!

Apphit update checker is SPYWARE. It installs without permission, scans local files, and reports data back to the internet. THAT IS SPYWARE, no matter what you say.

I am not assured that switching off the option in BitComet Advanced will prevent the spyware action of reporting my data to the internet. I only know it prevents the window appearing which displays the data to me.

All the responses to user comments from apphit fail to answer questions, and I have NO confidence in Apphit or their intentions whatsoever.

You still have not given detailed instructions how to remove this software. If you do not do so immediately, then I will remove BitComet too, and start using a different client.

What file do we seacrh for?

What folders do we search in?

apphit Wed Apr 23, 08 06:08 AM

Dear,

First, we want to clarify that we just want to explain the process clearly. You have the right to choose anything you like and we also have the faith to improve ourselves.

Again, the instruction:

Search the file named Software_Update_Checker

The folder means the place you put the software in when you download it

apphit Wed Apr 23, 08 06:11 AM

If you haven't installed the software, please switch off the option in BitComet Advanced.

Hi apphit-developerteam!

It would be a good idea to post an official statement regarding this:

"As of April 2008 FileHippo will no longer be updating BitComet. As they have copied the FileHippo site text, files, images and update checker and are passing it off as original work. We recommend you use a different more reputable torrent client such as uTorrent. "

Is it true? Apphit does in fact look like Filehippo..

Dear,

We are apphit. Yes, we learned a lot from Filehippo but we are engaging in provide better service to our customers and we're trying to have our own characteristics.

apphit - As stated by yourself I tried searching for "Software_Update_Checker" with the intention of unistalling this apphit spyware, but my search found no file of this name.

How do I uninstall the apphit software that came with Bitcomet??

I did not choose to install this when I downloaded BitComet. Where is this program installed??

It is not on the main add/remove programs for Windows! Do I have to uninstall BitComet all together?

apphit Sun Apr 27, 08 11:20 PM

Dear,

Are you sure you installed the update checker?

The update checker is a small software and it will not appear on the main add/remove programs for windows. Just remove it directly from the folder and there isn't anything else for you to uninstall.

When you install Bitcomet, there is an option called software update checking setting and if you select the default option, it will check the software update automaticly.

There is no need touninstall Bitcomet. Just follow the instruction in this post to change the option. :)

BitComet nowadays is being bundled with an inbuilt Update Checker from Apphit.com. While not a separetely uninstallable executable application on it's own because it is part of the installed BitComet code, Update Checker in BitComet collects information from your system, matches the version of your installed applications on your PC, and tells you which of your installed applications are not up-to-date.

Update Checker cannot be uninstalled because it is part of BitComet's code. Setting the settings in BitComet to disable the AppHit Update Checker DOES NOT UNINSTALL UPDATE CHECKER AT ALL. IT ONLY SUPPOSEDLY "DISABLES" IT.

I cannot be more clear than this. Disabling Update Checker DOES NOT UNINSTALL IT.

Since disabling it is only a partial to getting rid of Update Checker (which is a part of BitComet's code) the only way to get rid of it 100% is to REVERT TO THE OLDER VERSIONS of BitComet which are AppHit-Free.

The guys behind BitComet have lost my trust to allow AppHit incorporate this intrusive code in the main program's code. Who can give me guarantee that the settings for AppHit in BitComet when set to disable the offending code REALLY DISABLES THE CODE? What if the settings are set to "NEVER" run Update Checker but the AppHit code still runs nevertheless, and still gains access to my private information?

I can never know wether the AppHit code is running or not, since it is not a separate application or service, and I cannot kill it. It is part of the BitComet executable code!!!!

A Really Angry (now ex-) BitComet User Thu May 22, 08 09:54 AM

Moreover, when When installing BitComet a window will pop up, called "Software Update Check Setting", which states:

"BitComet is now able to check your installed software and tell you if any new version is released. This service is free, and the only information it collected is a list of programs and their versions, along with the operation system details. Any personal information will NOT be collected."

AS YOU CAN SEE THERE IS NO OPTION THAT SPECIFICALLY SAYS, "DO NOT INSTALL UPDATE CHECKER". YOU HAVE TO INSTALL BITCOMET WITH APPHIT UPDATE CHECKER INCORPORATED IN THE CODE, AND THEN SUPPOSEDLY DISABLE UPDATE CHECKER.

FOR ALL I KNOW I STILL HAVE A SUPPOSDELY “DISABLED” MALICIOUS CODE RUNNING ON MY MACHINE ALONGSIDE BITCOMET!!

apphit Fri May 23, 08 12:22 AM

Dear,

Again, we have to say that our concern is the satisfaction for our users. For the convenience, we provide the choice for every user to adopt the update checker. You have the right to choose it or not to choose it. We're quite sorry if it bothers you. Please follow the instruction from the post "About Update Checker" to disable it. There is no malicious code.

Great. BitComet just screwed up. No way to take a way the spyware called apeshit, sorry apphit, other than removing BitComet.

Please, everybody, remove BitComet, make the BitComet team understand they made a mistake and wait for next AppHit (and other spyware) free version.

Thanks.

Thanks for the concern!

Hi folks. As a new user and the fact I am not too happy with ANY software that scans my computer for ANYTHING without my permission, I had to make a comment. Bitcomet, seems to me this is dropping your popularity against utorrent big time. However, utorrent developers seem to not be able to code anything much more than basic language, and therefore can't get by Vista security to connect to any servers unless the user has an engineering degree and can manage a work around. Hence, I have bitcomet because it does. As a new user and the fact I am not too happy with ANY software that scans my computer for ANYTHING without my permission, I had to make a comment. Hence, I have bitcomet because it does connect. Evidently the average jobless torrent user (as the guy above) seems to be able to develop a work-around. I, however, cannot. Bitcomet was my 4th try and connected effortlessly without port forwarding or any of that crap. Bitcomet - I would much rather send you 5$ through paypal for your efforts than have this atrocity running in the background. My experience tells me, most people will donate SOMETHING if it's requested. Especially if it eliminates this spyware. Apphit, I'm sorry, but if you ask Kim Kommando (the chick with the radio show in like 100 cities) she too will agree, you've got a nice little spyware app running. Judging by the outrage, as a manager, I would be saying, "Back to the drawing board guys. Bad P.R. is Bad P.R."

apphit Mon Jul 21, 08 11:59 PM

Dear,

Sorry to bother you. If you don't want to run the update checker, I wonder is it possible for you to follow the post to change its option? Thanks!

Apphit, you guys just don't get it. The problem is not about "disabling it" in the options or whatever shit you said. The real problem here is WE DON'T WANT IT BEING INSTALL INTO OUR COMPUTERS!!!

We want Bitcomet and only Bitcomet not "Software_Update_Checker". Our request here is when we install Bitcomet, we have option NOT TO INSTALL "Software_Update_Checker" or whatever shit program name you have there. I know I can disable it. But the point is not about disabling it, the point is about having the chance to CHOOSE not to have it install at all.

Again and again you have ask us to follow your post which is how to disable it. While agin and again, we are complaining that we cannot be 100% sure after we disable it the program will STOP SENDING DATA TO THE INTERNET!!! Is you or us are stupid enough not to understand this? I don't it would be me.

Although I like this new version of Bitcomet, I guess I have to uninstall it and get an older version.

Regards

Edward

Dear,

Thanks for the concern! We promised that when you disable the update checker, it will stop collecting the data.
