BitComet - TCP/IP Patches

Windows XP SP2 limits TCP connection attempts to 10 (quite small ). If there are more concurrent TCP connection attempts, Windows generate a warnning: EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts. Since XP SP2 there are only 10 concurrent TCP connection attempts possible, while in SP1 it has not been limited. (A connection attemp is a query to a computer, if it accept the TCP connection or not. If the computer is for example no more existent, it will be waited for a few seconds, until a timeout occurs and the connection attemp get canceled. )

BitComet 0.55 or above was modified for SP2 so that they can work in SP2 without any configuration. However, it may cause slow speed at the beginning of downloading, since less peers can be connected at the same time. For those behind NAT or firewalled user, a patch in the option dialog in version 0.71 or later is recommended to fix that issue.

After you applied that patch, you may need to changed the Max Simultaneous TCP connection attempts in the BitComet Options - Advanced - TCP/IP Limit.

ok, I am a newbie here. BUT I refuse to crash my computer. How do I onstall the patch? AND Could somone give me exact directions on the TC/IP limit, or give me a link so I can be sure to follow the guidlines. I have a BAD feeling if you mess with this stuff things can go bad in a hurry!

Our Forum Staff recommend you do not patch your tcpip.sys file. The limit of "half-open" tcpip connections is 10 per second, not 10 total. There is no reason one would "need" more the 10 connection attempts per second.

At best, you may gather your max number of peers a couple minutes sooner, and a 2hour download might take 1:59mins, hardly worth the problems that could be caused by altering your system files.

The UnUsual Suspect (Admin forums.bitcomet.com)

ps. if you do want to install this patch, it is included with recent versions of the client.

The_UnUsual_Suspect Mon Nov 5, 07 03:10 PM

To remove this patch.

Bitcomet saved the original tcpip.sys file by renaming it to something like "orignal.tcpip.sys" (depending on version).

Start your computer in "safe-mode", and rename the original file back to tcpip.sys, then restart.
