BitComet - TCP/IP Patches

Windows XP SP2 limits TCP connection attempts to 10 (quite small ). If there are more concurrent TCP connection attempts, Windows generate a warnning: EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts. Since XP SP2 there are only 10 concurrent TCP connection attempts possible, while in SP1 it has not been limited. (A connection attemp is a query to a computer, if it accept the TCP connection or not. If the computer is for example no more existent, it will be waited for a few seconds, until a timeout occurs and the connection attemp get canceled. )

BitComet 0.55 or above was modified for SP2 so that they can work in SP2 without any configuration. However, it may cause slow speed at the beginning of downloading, since less peers can be connected at the same time. For those behind NAT or firewalled user, a patch in the option dialog in version 0.71 or later is recommended to fix that issue.

After you applied that patch, you may need to changed the Max Simultaneous TCP connection attempts in the BitComet Options - Advanced - TCP/IP Limit.

i patched my tcpip settings in options section and it increased my dowload speed incredibly. but after awhile my com begun not entering the internet. i turned to every recommendation but they didnt sort my problem. only by formatting the com cud i reenter the internet. but now again it is downloading slowly. so that it takes sometimes days and even weeks to fully complete a dowload. cud anyone please tell me how to speed up downloading without harming the system. ? would much appreciate any help.

For all those wanna-be-geeks out there: In your Registry goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters and increase the value TcpNumConnections, usually it's 10, try 50. This may help your conntection stability, and speed, if you're lucky. Forget the half-open limits.

In any way, if you don't know what you're doing, let it or be prepared to read some hours in the net to get knowledge. Don't just say tell me - go google, read and learn. I primise you'll understand if you try hard.

If you can't find "TcpNumConnections" at the Registry location mentioned above, try adding "\Winsock" (no quotation marks).

ie:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Winsock

That's one of the locations where I find it running Service Pack 3

to those of you guys who have the Half-open limit connection problem, here is the way you can do it easily :

1 . Ask your friend who uses the same OS like you, ask him to send you the tcpip.sys file in his C:\windows\system32\drivers

2 . Copy that file in your C:\windows\system32\drivers folder

3 . Run Bitcomet, now you can do whatever you want with half-open limit :)

Yeah, but if you're running Service Pack 3 and you do that, Windows will pop up a warning that one of your system files has been changed. You'll then have to ignore the warning, and then shut down auto-updates, 'cause it'll try to download and install the Service Pack 3 version of tcpip.sys.

I think BitComet somehow gets around any limits imposed by the newer SP-3 tcpip, because I don't seem to notice any problems setting half-open limits.

Once in awhile, my event log will show errors that my tcpip limits have been exceeded, but I don't seem to notice any impact on my downloading capabilities.

(Oh, yeah...I am running an older version of BitComet:

"BitComet 0.85 Stable Release for Windows 2000/XP" and the reason for that is I like the "Summary" information lay-out a lot more, and I seem to get better speeds with this version.)

Current OS version:Windows Vista (6.0.6001)

TCPIP.SYS version:6.0.6001.18063

current half open limit:This version of TCPIP.SYS is not supported to be modified.

Does anyone know what to do with that??? I keep getting grey light and i changed all possible functions in windows firewall and my router.... but NO green light at all!!!

Hope someone has a sollution!!!

Grtz

My lower right 'ball' is still yellow and the address is still 'blocked'.

I began with about MB/s download: I've been slowly upgrading the TCP/IP 'half-open' factor without patch just to see what'll happen: my download jumped to between 46 and 60 MB/s as I adjusted the half-open factor up slightly every so often.

Also, the disk cache and several related factors were tweaked up from B.C. "Options".

Result has been no problems and increased download rate (including seeding).

This is B.C. 1.03. Hopefully, 1.04 won't be such a dick.

I began with about 20 MB/s download:~
