<img src="http://useful-home-decor.com/images/200522412223236593.jpg" alt="" width="183" height="137" align="left" />A
British company has developed a camera that can detect weapons, drugs
or explosives hidden under people&rsquo;s clothes from up to 25 meters away
in what could be a breakthrough for the security industry. The T5000
camera, created by a company called ThruVision, uses what it calls
&ldquo;passive imaging technology&rdquo; to identify objects by the natural
electromagnetic rays &mdash; known as Terahertz or T-rays &mdash; that they emit.
The high-powered camera can detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet
away and is effective even when people are moving. It does not reveal
physical body details and the screening is harmless, the company says.
The technology, which has military and civilian applications and could
be used in crowded airports, shopping malls or sporting events, will be
unveiled at a scientific development exhibition sponsored by Britain&rsquo;s
Home Office on March 12-13.
</p>
<p>
&nbsp;
</p>
<p>
&ldquo;Acts of terrorism have shaken the world in recent years and
security precautions have been tightened globally,&rdquo; said Clive Beattie,
the chief executive of ThruVision. &ldquo;The ability to see both metallic
and non-metallic items on people out to 25 meters is certainly a key
capability that will enhance any comprehensive security system.&rdquo; The
technology works on the basis that all people and objects emit low
levels of electromagnetic radiation. Terahertz rays lie somewhere
between infrared and microwaves on the electromagnetic spectrum and
travel through clouds and walls. Depending on the material, the
signature of the wave is different, so that explosives can be
distinguished from a block of clay and cocaine is different from a bag
of flour.

Apple has revealed that its next iPhone update will include more
than just the expected addition of a software development kit (SDK).
The company said that a host of enterprise-minded features and an
application store will be added to the iPhone 2.0 software release.
Developers and certain enterprise customers will be able to download
the beta release immediately. All other users will have to wait until
June. But this is the result of a little bit of searching on <a href="http://www.mininova.org/tor/1223394" target="_blank">Mininova</a>.
The SDK will include APIs for the iPhone&rsquo;s Core OS, Core Services,
Media and Cocoa Touch software components. Developers will be able to
sell their software to users via Apple&rsquo;s new iPhone App Store which
will allow users to download the software directly to the iPhone or
iPod Touch. Apple said that developers can set their own prices for
applications sold on the store, and that the company would take a 30
per cent commission. The figure is similar to the prices Apple
reportedly pays record labels for songs sold via iTunes.

Things will get very ugly over the next few months for the RIAA, if
one disgruntled file sharing lawsuit victim gets her way. Tanya
Andersen, the single mother who filed a countersuit against the RIAA
after the organization mistakenly <a href="http://www.rlslog.net/omg-riaa-wins-woman-has-to-pay-220k/" target="_blank">sued her</a>
for sharing music online, attempted to hold it responsible for all
sorts of heavy infractions. RIAA could be forced to release potentially
incriminating details about its techniques for investigating alleged
file sharers. This information would likely be held under a
confidential seal, but if lawsuits over mold, tobacco, and asbestos are
any indication, the RIAA&rsquo;s secrets will likely leak out into the legal
community at large, potentially culminating in a class-action lawsuit.

Once Tanya Andersen files her amended Complaint, which the RIAA is
barred from contesting this time around, the organization could have to
explain the following details by producing documents and allowing
major-label anti-piracy executives to be deposed:

- How much the RIAA&rsquo;s lawyers make<br />

IE development team, said on a <a href="http://www.on10.net/blogs/larry/First-Look-Internet-Explorer-8/">video</a>

Aiming to demonstrate that its commitment to interoperability goes
beyond fancy statements, Microsoft said Monday that it is shifting its
plans for the next version of Internet Explorer to make the program
more friendly to Web standards. The software maker said that a planned
standards compatibility mode will now be the default rendering engine
when IE8 makes its debut. Microsoft has already said that the new
browser is capable of passing the Acid2 rendering test. &ldquo;We think that
acting in accordance with principles is important, and IE8&rsquo;s default is
a demonstration of the interoperability principles in action,&rdquo; IE
general manager Dean Hachamovitch said in a <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/03/03/microsoft-s-interoperability-principles-and-ie8.aspx" class="external-link">blog posting</a>.
</p>
<p>
&nbsp;
</p>
<p>
With IE8, Microsoft plans to have three rendering modes: the new
standards-compliant mode, the IE7 rendering engine, as well as an
option for displaying older Web sites. Because of the default shift,
Web sites that want IE8 to use its IE7 engine will have to add a tag to
their site&rsquo;s code. Microsoft noted that there are some legal reasons
for changing course. &ldquo;While we do not believe there are currently any
legal requirements that would dictate which rendering mode must be
chosen as the default for a given browser, this step clearly removes
this question as a potential legal and regulatory issue,&rdquo; Microsoft
General Counsel Brad Smith said in a statement. Microsoft hasn&rsquo;t said
when the final version will be out, but a beta version of the browser
is due out in the first half of the year.

Technology, a leading supplier of memory modules, demonstrated on
Thursday its ability to overclock its HyperX DDR3 memory modules to
unprecedented clock-speed with the help of a mainboard running Nvidia
Corp.&rsquo;s next-generation core-logic that supports DDR3 memory. The
memory module maker overclocked its HyperX PC3-16000 (KHX16000D2K2/2G)
memory modules from their default clock-speed of 2.0GHz to 2.13GHz
using a mainboard powered by yet unannounced Nvidia nForce 790i
core-logic for Intel Corp.&rsquo;s processors. At press time it was unclear
which latency and voltage settings were set. Back last year A-Data and
Walton Chaintech introduced their 2GHz&nbsp;Vitesta DDR3-2000X and Apogee GT
Blazer DDR3 2000 memory kits that could operate at 2.0GHz with 2.10V or
2.15V voltage setting.
</p>
<p>

<p>
The ultra high-speed memory modules utilize 6-layer print-circuit
boards, which are often used to manufacture rather expensive graphics
cards and mainboards, which automatically makes such memory devices
pretty expensive.In mid-February this year Corsair Memory also joined
the 2GHz club with its new Dominator-series memory modules. Back last
year very few platforms could actually handle 2.0GHz memory speed and
hardly all end-users who acquired such memory modules could actually
make them work at their frequency. However, as Intel X48 and Nvidia
nForce 790i SLI chipsets are approaching the market, it is expected
that considerably more enthusiast-class platforms will be able to boast
with 2.0GHz memory clock-speed. Currently unannounced Kingston HyperX
PC3-16000 (KHX16000D2K2/2G) memory modules&nbsp;will be available in Q1 2008.

through the black market is making its way onto some of the largest
corporate Web sites in the world. San Jose-based Finjan, a security
company specializing in Web gateway solutions, announced today that it
uncovered a database containing more than 8,700 harvested FTP account
credentials, including usernames, passwords and server addresses,
spread through a malicious toolkit, which cyber criminals use to
harvest the information. The information was available for blackmarket
trade, along with the NeoSploit version 2 crimeware toolkit, a
malicious application specifically designed to abuse and trade stolen
FTP account credentials from numerous legitimate companies. The malware
is subsequently distributed to other criminals who use the malicious
code on high traffic Web sites for their own financial gain.
<p>
&nbsp;
</p>
<p>
<span> The whole package, which includes the FTP
server credentials as well as the Neosploit malicious toolkit, acts as
Software as a Service for criminals because it supports multiple users,
Finjan researchers say. Attackers use a sophisticated trading interface
to classify the stolen accounts by the FTP server&rsquo;s country of origin
and the compromised site&rsquo;s Google page ranking. This information
enables attackers to determine cost of the compromised FTP credentials
for resale to cybercriminals or to leverage themselves in an attack
against the more prominent Web sites. Finjan researchers believe that
the amount of money that criminals pay for the malware is minimal,
likely in the neighborhood of $100. Attackers use the credentials to
infiltrate corporate Web servers in order inject crimeware onto the
legitimate servers of public companies, government agencies and
financial institutions to steal critical information such as pass
codes, bank account and social security numbers.</span>

Microsoft Corp said on Thursday it plans to cut prices of its
Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets in a move aimed
at pushing customers to switch to the newest version of Windows. The
world&rsquo;s largest software maker said it plans to lower retail prices for
Vista in 70 countries later this year in tandem with the shipment of
the first major update to Vista, known as Service Pack 1 (SP1).
Packaged versions of Windows Vista sold at stores and on the Web
account for less than 10 percent of all licenses of the dominant
Windows operating system that sits on more than 90 percent of the
world&rsquo;s personal computers. Most consumers opt to buy a new PC, which
comes preloaded with the latest version of Windows.

</p>
<p>
&ldquo;We anticipate these changed will provide greater opportunities &hellip; to
sell more stand-alone copies of Windows,&rdquo; said Brad Brooks, a Microsoft
corporate vice president. In the United States, Microsoft will reduce
prices for Windows Vista Ultimate, the company&rsquo;s top-end operating
system, to $319 from $399 for the full version and cut the price for an
&ldquo;upgrade&rdquo; version to $219 from $259 for consumers who already run
Windows XP or another edition of Vista. It also cut prices for upgrade
versions of Vista Home Premium, its mainstream product, to $129 from
$159. The price cuts vary by country. This price cut may be a good news
for users who have problems with their illegal copy after recent
security update.

As it promised, Microsoft Corp. yesterday started sending Windows Vista
users an update that identifies illegal copies of the operating system
installed with cracks that the company will disable when it distributes
Service Pack 1 (SP1) in two weeks. Last Thursday, Microsoft announced
the update, which detects two common cracks used to activate pirated
copies of Vista, and said it would hit Windows Update (WU) within a
week. Users who have left Vista&rsquo;s recommended WU settings alone will
receive the update automatically. Others, said Microsoft, must enable
Automatic Update within Vista or manually call up WU from the Start
menu.
</p>
<p>
A <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940510" target="new">document</a>
posted to the company&rsquo;s support site spelled out the details. Among
other things, it promised that the 3MB update &ldquo;does not affect the
functionality of your operating system.&rdquo; That jibes with what Alex
Kochis, senior product manager for Microsoft&rsquo;s Windows Genuine
Advantage program, said last week when he announced the update. If the
update finds one of the cracks, a notice pops up alerting the user, but
it doesn&rsquo;t disable either crack. The first, dubbed &ldquo;Grace Timer,&rdquo;
extends Vista&rsquo;s activation grace period, while the other, &ldquo;OEM BIOS,&rdquo;
mimics factory-floor activation. Users whose PCs don&rsquo;t have the cracks
will not see the pop-up. Ouch, dark times for all Vista pirates! I&rsquo;m
sure there will be workaround pretty soon though&hellip;

Japan successfully launched Saturday an experimental satellite aimed
at providing high-speed Internet access across Asia, even when
terrestrial infrastructure goes down, the space agency said. The
domestically developed H-2A rocket carrying the Kizuna satellite was
launched at 17:55 pm (0855 GMT) with no glitches from the Space Centre
on Tanegashima island off the southern tip of Kyushu Island, southern
Japan. The communications satellite, expected to be in use for five
years, separated from the rocket approximately 35 minutes after the
launch, said an official of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
(JAXA) during a live broadcast. The 342 million dollar-Kizuna will
allow super-high speed data communications of up to 1.2 Gbps, which
would make it the fastest in the world, the agency said.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://inventorspot.com/files/images/winds_e.img_assist_custom.jpg" alt="" />
</p>
<p>
That rate would translate to 150 times that of the average
high-speed ADSL connection rate of 8 Mbps, or 12 times the speed of a
fibre-optic communication delivery to a person&rsquo;s premises (FTTP). The
&ldquo;Kizuna,&rdquo; which also means &ldquo;bond&rdquo; in Japanese, is expected to begin
transmitting and receiving data with terrestrial infrastructures in
July after completing preparations and confirming the satellite&rsquo;s
safety. The satellite will enable students in Asian countries to
communicate smoothly and with no time lag among one another, as if they
were in the same classroom, it said. The satellite will to last five
years, an agency spokeswoman said. The launch was delayed by one week
after JAXA said it had discovered a problem with the gas jet thruster
for its launch rocket.

detection and Network Access Protection, with Wi-Fi Protected Access 2
(WPA2) that was provided for in Windows Vista. But as this isn&rsquo;t a
final version, if your system has been stable and running fine, I would
suggest you not to upgrade for a while and let the bugs and kinks be
fully worked out. Take my word for it; it&rsquo;ll definitely be worth the
wait.

<span> Service Pack 3 adds several networking and
security improvements, and compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows
Server 2008 security credential providers. It also incorporates
features previously available individually as separate updates, such as
Micorsoft Windows Imaging Component (WIC), Microsoft Management Console

Today, Norway appears to be a much safer country for petty file sharers. The Hollywood lawyer Espen T&oslash;ndel has been told by <a href="http://www.politi.no/portal/page?_pageid=34,49046&amp;_dad=portal&amp;_schema=PORTAL&amp;articles2_mode=about_od&amp;articles2_articleGroupName=Om%2520distriktet%2520Hovedside&amp;navigation3_mode=shortcuts1&amp;navigation4_mode=shortcuts1&amp;articles5_mode=aboutCategory_od&amp;articles5_articleGroupName=Om%2520distriktet%2520Underkategori&amp;persons1_mode=about&amp;navigation1_parentItemId=1897&amp;navigation1_selectedItemId=1980&amp;navigation3_parentItemId=1980&amp;orgUnitId=1926&amp;uicell=12497.JPG">Kripos</a> (serious crime police) that they will not be spending time investigating small-time pirates.

Like many lawyers in the anti-piracy arena, T&oslash;ndel tries to blur
civil and criminal law to obtain leverage. The police are clear - their
priority is investigating real crimes, such as murder and robbery and
sadly for him, file-sharing does not fall into those categories. T&oslash;ndel
must now make his claims against alleged pirates in a civil court.
</p> <p>
Following this major setback, T&oslash;ndel wrote to the Department of
Justice and demanded a meeting with them. He complained that copyright
holders need to go through the criminal system as without the help of
the police, all they have is an IP address. They cannot sue an IP

<img src="http://www.scramdisk.clara.net/logo1.gif" alt="" width="175" height="160" align="left" />
Researchers with Princeton University and the Electronic Frontier
Foundation have found a flaw that renders disk encryption systems
useless if an intruder has physical access to your computer &mdash; say in
the case of a stolen laptop or when a computer is left unattended on a
desktop in sleep mode or while displaying a password prompt screen. The
attack takes only a few minutes to conduct and uses the disk encryption
key that&rsquo;s stored in the computer&rsquo;s RAM. The attack works because
content as well as encryption keys stored in RAM linger in the system,
even after the machine is powered off, enabling an attacker to use the
key to collect any content still in RAM after reapplying power to the
machine.
</p>
<p>
&nbsp;
</p>
<p>
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve broken disk encryption products in exactly the case when they
seem to be most important these days: laptops that contain sensitive
corporate data or personal information about business customers,&rdquo; said
J. Alex Halderman, one of the researchers, in a press release. &ldquo;Unlike
many security problems, this isn&rsquo;t a minor flaw; it is a fundamental
limitation in the way these systems were designed.&rdquo; The researchers
successfully performed the attack on several disk encryption systems &mdash;
Apple&rsquo;s FileVault, Microsoft&rsquo;s BitLocker, as well as TrueCrypt and
dm-crypt &mdash; but said they have no reason to believe it won&rsquo;t work on
other disk encryption systems as well, since they all share similar
architectures. They released <a href="http://citp.princeton.edu/memory/">a paper</a> about their work as well as a video demonstration (available at <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDaicPIgn9U">YouTube</a>) of the attack.

<img src="http://www.hollandc.pe.ca/images/MicrosoftAcademicAlliance.gif" alt="" width="150" height="67" align="left" />Microsoft
Corp. is giving students free access to its most sophisticated tools
for writing software and making media-rich Web sites, a move that
intensifies its competition with Adobe Systems Inc. and could challenge
open source software&rsquo;s popularity. The Redmond-based software maker
said late Monday it will let students download Visual Studio
Professional Edition, a software development environment; Expression
Studio, which includes graphic design and Web site and hybrid
Web-desktop programming tools; and XNA Game Studio 2.0, a video game
development program. The company will also give away SQL Server 2005
Developer Edition and Windows Server Standard Edition.
</p>
<p>
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said the company&rsquo;s past efforts to
arrange educational discounts for these programs limited the number of
students who ultimately could use them. DreamSpark, as Microsoft is
calling the free software offering, opens up access to many more
students. &ldquo;We give up some revenue, but we gain the fact that we&rsquo;ll get
the feedback of these students, get more courses to incorporate our
tools into the programs and get more startups where kids are familiar
with Visual Studio, Expression Studio and SQL Server,&rdquo; Gates said in a
phone interview. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a brilliant strategic move on the part of
Microsoft,&rdquo; said Chris Swenson, a software industry analyst with NPD
Group. &ldquo;This is one of the core audiences you have to hit if you really
want to make a difference in the rich Internet application market going
forward.&rdquo; The programs are <a href="http://channel8.msdn.com/">available</a>
now to more than 35 million college students. My university already
provides a bunch of free software from Microsoft, but this will make
things even better!

It has been three months since the popular (semi)private BitTorrent
tracker Demonoid went offline. Since then, there has been a lot of
speculation about its future, and many feared that the site would never
return. Totally out of the blue, however, the tracker is now responding
again.
</p> <p>
The frontend of Demonoid is still hosted in the US, together with the popular <a href="http://www.subdemon.com/forum/index.php">Subdemon forums</a>. Interestingly, the tracker - which has been offline for months - is now hosted <a href="http://whois.domaintools.com/124.217.253.30">in Malaysia</a>, and has started to respond again, approximately 30 hours ago.
</p> <p>
It is of course not clear what this all means, but without an
official message from the Demonoid team, speculation has started. Could
it be that the site has found a new host, and preparing a return? Many
former Demonoid members are secretly hoping that this is indeed the
case.
</p> <p>
Last December, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be
one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, posted a message on the
Subdemon forums on the possibility of a return. At the time <a href="http://www.subdemon.com/forum/index.php?topic=1559.msg50594#msg50594">he wrote</a>:
&ldquo;Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a
suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And
there&rsquo;s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of
my time at the moment, and that does not help.&rdquo;

world-conquering antipiracy organizations took strike to clear the mess
also in wild (in terms of piracy) China now. All six members of the
Motion Picture Association (MPA) have filed copyright infringement
suits in China against Shenzhen Xunlei Networking Technology (Xunlei),
a popular peer-to-peer file sharing network operator, the MPA said
Friday. The companies are seeking damages and legal fees in excess of 7
million renminbi (US$975,000) in the cases. The MPA members are also
seeking a public admission to the alleged copyright infringement and a
pledge from <a href="http://www.xunlei.com/">Xunlei</a> to refrain from future infringements. The civil complaints were filed in the Shanghai Pudong District Court.
</p> <p>
&nbsp;
</p> <p>
Xunlei offers downloads of popular peer-to-peer file sharing software <a href="http://dl.xunlei.com/index.htm?tag=1" target="_blank">Thunder5</a> and WebThunder
from its Web site. The names of the two downloads have been translated
to English from Chinese. Xunlei means Thunder in Chinese. Early last

that Xunlei attracted a US$5 million investment from U.S. search giant
Google, in return for a 4 percent stake in Xunlei. The MPA members
allege Xunlei&rsquo;s software is responsible for the unauthorized trading of
hundreds of MPA member movie titles, and listed 32 titles on the

<img src="http://www.product-reviews.net/wp-content/userimages/2007/09/wii-360-ps3.jpg" alt="" width="256" height="162" align="left" /> The US gaming industry ended 2007 with record retail sales of <span class="gslink"> nearly $18 billion</span>.
This week, though, the NPD Group provided a sobering reminder that
market growth is not guaranteed. Today, the industry-research firm
released its US retail sales data for its January 2008 reporting
period. While software sales for the month were up 11 percent to nearly
$611 million for the month, hardware sales fell by a quarter to about
$378 million. Combined with modestly declining accessory sales, the
overall industry was down 6 percent for the month, posting $1.18
billion compared to January 2007&rsquo;s $1.25 billion take.
</p>
<p>
Despite that, the month contained indications that the industry
actually grew. That&rsquo;s because NPD&rsquo;s January 2007 reporting period was
actually five weeks long as opposed to this January&rsquo;s four-week span.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted that the numbers are much rosier when
that adjustment is taken into account. &ldquo;At the top-line, on an average
sales per week basis, January 2007 was actually up nearly 18 percent as
compared to last year,&rdquo; Frazier said. &ldquo;And the big winner was console
software which was up nearly 50 percent when compared on a level
playing field to last year.&rdquo; However, even on a week-by-week basis,
hardware sales were still down 6 percent from last year. Frazier blamed
that slide on price cuts made to the consoles, and speculated that
hardware shortages in the wake of stellar December sales contributed to
January&rsquo;s slide. That assertion was backed up a statement from
Microsoft saying the Xbox 360 was suffering from temporary shortages.

Reports show that 50% of all people using BitTorrent at any given
point in time do so to download TV-series, quite an impressive number.
In total, over a billion TV-shows are downloaded every year, and this
number continues to rise.
</p> <p>
It is safe to say that BitTorrent is slowly replacing Tivo. Some
episodes of popular TV-shows such as &ldquo;Lost&rdquo;, &ldquo;Prison Break&rdquo; and
&ldquo;Heroes&rdquo; get up to 10 million downloads per episode, spread over
hundreds of sites. This number is getting awfully close to the average
number of viewers on TV in the US. However, the major difference is
that the BitTorrent &ldquo;viewers&rdquo; come from all over the world.
</p> <p>
In January TorrentFreak published the list of &ldquo;most downloaded
TV-shows&ldquo;, where we showed that the most popular episode of &ldquo;Heroes&rdquo;
was downloaded 2.5 million times on Mininova alone. Even more
impressive -across all BitTorrent sites- more than a billion episodes
are downloaded every year worldwide.
</p> <p>
The graph below shows the percentage of .torrent files per category
downloaded on Mininova over the last 2 years - over 40 percent are
TV-shows. To support this, we analyzed a sample of 400,000 torrents
earlier this year. That data indicated that approximately half of all
the people using BitTorrent at any given point in time, were using it
to download a TV-show.

citizens and their joy in lawsuing about everything is back and crazier
than ever before. A Washington, D.C. woman has sued Best Buy for $54
million, claiming the consumer electronics retailer lost her computer
and then tried to cover up the disappearance. Raelyn Campbell, 37,
acknowledges that the money she wants is more than the price of the
notebook and the inconvenience she has suffered. But she said the

<span>In her blog, Campbell provides a timeline of
her contacts with Best Buy, starting May 25, 2007, when she left the

contract. On Jan. 25 of this year, a Superior Court judge recommended
that she and Best Buy try to settle the matter on their own. </span>Campbell
said she offered to drop the suit, if the company paid her for her
expenses and time and addressed &ldquo;the shortcomings in its property and
privacy protection practices.&rdquo; Best Buy hasn&rsquo;t responded, according to
Campbell, and the next court hearing is set for Feb. 22. The only
compensation Campbell has received from Best Buy is $1,110.35 that was
transferred into her credit card account in late October without her

Valentine&rsquo;s Day campaign that the bot-building Storm Trojan horse has
been running for weeks is running at such volume that even the FBI
issued a warning yesterday. &ldquo;With the holiday approaching, be on the
lookout for spam e-mails spreading the Storm Worm malicious software,&rdquo;
the <a href="http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel08/stormworm021208.htm" target="new">FBI said in an alert</a>
posted to the home page of its Web site yesterday. The Storm Worm virus
has capitalized on various holidays in the last year by sending
millions of e-mails advertising an e-card link within the text of the
spam e-mail. Valentine&rsquo;s Day has been identified as the next target.

&ldquo;This year&rsquo;s version looks like a stripped-down version of last
year&rsquo;s,&rdquo; Jamz Yaneza, research project manager at Trend Micro said in
an interview last month about Storm&rsquo;s one-year anniversary. &ldquo;They&rsquo;ve
optimized the way [the bot is delivered] over the past months,&rdquo; he
said, citing an example of how this year&rsquo;s Valentine&rsquo;s Day campaign
would differ from 2007&rsquo;s. &ldquo;They&rsquo;ve learned that there&rsquo;s no need to add
an attachment.&rdquo; Trend Micro senior antivirus researcher David Sancho
spelled it out in a post to the company&rsquo;s blog on Monday. &ldquo;The spammed

Nvidia on Wednesday said it has completed the acquisition of Ageia, a maker of <font color="#000000"><span style="border-bottom: medium none; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; padding-bottom: 0px; color: darkblue; background-color: transparent; cursor: pointer" class="iAs">software tools</span></font> for video and PC games.
<p>
Nvidia, which announced plans this month
to buy Ageia, will use the latter company's products in conjunction
with CUDA. CUDA is technology that Nvidia provides developers for
offloading work from a computer's general-purpose CPU to a separate
graphics-processing unit. Support for Ageia's PhysX software and
hardware would be added to CUDA for GPU rendering of PhysX-provided
special effects.
</p> <p>
Ageia has built a niche for itself in gaming by offering
technology that handles those elements of a video game that add realism
to the overall experience. For example, the technology adds dust and
flying debris to explosions, more life-like character motion and
interaction, and dense smoke from objects in motion or on fire.
</p> <p>
Ageia's PhysX software is used in 140 titles shipping or in development for PCs, Sony Playstation 3, <a style="border-bottom: medium none; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; padding-bottom: 0px; color: darkblue; background-color: transparent; cursor: pointer" href="http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206503628#" target="_blank" class="iAs"><img style="border: 0pt none ; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; height: 10px; width: 10px; position: relative; top: 1px; left: 1px; float: none; display: inline" src="http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/3.gif" alt="" /></a>Microsoft (NSDQ: <a href="http://www.techweb.com/financialCenter/index.jhtml?Account=techweb&amp;Page=QUOTE&amp;Ticker=MSFT" target="_blank" class="stockLink">MSFT</a>)
Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii, according to Ageia. There are more than
10,000 registered users of the PhysX software development kit.

CUDA is used in conjunction with Nvidia's GeForce 8800GT GPU,
which has 112 processors for handling the heavy computational tasks of
graphics-intensive games.

<img src="http://techgigger.com/mt/archives/maven%20logo.gif" alt="" width="154" height="61" align="left" />In a funny coincidence with today&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.rlslog.net/maven-kingpin-geremi-adam-is-on-the-run-from-police/">post</a>
about maVen&rsquo;s leader running away from police, Yahoo acquired the
same-titled company according to recent news. Yahoo has acquired Maven
Networks for US$160 million in a deal that will help the search
provider boost its video advertising capabilities. Media companies
including Fox Infrastructure, CBS Sports, Sony BMG use Maven&rsquo;s platform
to manage, distribute and earn advertising revenue from their online
video content. The platform includes an advertising insertion engine as
well as inventory management and reporting tools. Companies use it to
post videos on their sites and insert interactive ads into the videos.
</p>
<p>
Yahoo Tuesday said it plans to contribute its display advertising
sales force and technologies to Maven&rsquo;s platform to help publishers
display more targeted ads in videos. The deal means that advertisers
can buy video, search and display ads through Yahoo, which believes
that video is a fast growing segment of the online ad market. Maven has
become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yahoo, which has established a
Cambridge, Massachusetts, office with the acquisition. I hope this
won&rsquo;t mean a new wave in video advertising, which is quite annoying&hellip;
