HOW TO GO VIRAL WITH A LOW TRAFFIC WEBSITE

I was contacted by a reader yesterday who asked me the following question:

I read your first case study on how you made a post to the front page of digg. My blog is a zero traffic one. Even if I use those techniques, no one will submit my post to digg.

Now, this is a question I get asked a LOT... and my guess is that there are thousands of DeanHunt.com readers who may have the same issue.

So let's get one thing clear... does having a popular website increase your chances of your content going viral?

Yes! Absolutely!

Ever wondered why certain sites in an industry get mentioned over and over again?

It is a bit like the old phrase: "you need money to make money".

In this instance, you need traffic to make traffic.

Well, there is a way around this. And I am going to share this with you today.

Here is the secret:

You can leverage other people's traffic.

Here is how I see the viral process:

Your viral content is like a seed in a field. The field is your industry, the planet is the Internet.

When you plant your seed, if it is a big, strong seed (great content), it will have a chance to grow... however, if your seed is picked up by a bird (reader) and planted in a larger field (another blog, social media site etc) then it is now growing in two places. Thus increasing the chances of it spreading further.

This pattern continues, and you may eventually be in thousands of fields, thus boosting your chances of getting on Digg by 1000%+

So what I am trying to say is this...

Putting one seed in one field is only going to work if you have thousands of birds (readers) who can spread it for you.

If you have low traffic, then you don't have any......

The browser wars are heating up- again. Chrome made its debut as a beta on September 2nd; for Google, a beta period of only a few months is a surprisingly short one.

The hour of ‘entertainment' was part commercial excess, part news announcement, and part tourist announcement. You see, the opening of a museum in Los Angeles was announced with the show, making those wanting to visit California during their vacations have yet another reason to visit the City of the Angels. The museum will devote itself to the wondrous excesses of the Grammy awards, all 50 years extant.

We were given the announcements of the nomination process, a few looks back into the past winners, and some moments of songs that had previously won the award.

Google is taking Chrome out of Beta barely months after the its initial release and prior to completing the plugin architecture. Is Chrome ready for prime time or is Google giving it a nudge to grab a share of new computer search queries?

The official release has come just over three months after the initial test release, a record pace for a Google product.

As an example, Gmail has been in Beta since April of 2004 when the first invites started trickling out to the public. Over four years later the Google email service shows no signs of being made official.

And why should Google make its services other than search official? The company is constantly tinkering with new experimental features that users are happy to tinker with whether they're official or not.

Unfortunately for fans of the company whose motto is, "Don't be evil," the only clear motivation for the move seems to be greed. Specifically, Google wants to own the search bar in the browsers of laptops and PCs that are set to be released in 2009.

OEMs cannot distribute Beta software along with their shiny new computing hardware as one of the reasons for the move and the millions of dollars in search query revenue that Google will make from having Chrome installed on forthcoming......

1.  Upgrade Your RAM

Yeah, the most obvious tip but people hardly upgrade it. RAM these days is very cheap, especially if you buy it through Amazon or eBay. When I checked Amazon, the price of 1 GB RAM was around $20-$30.

2. Get Rid of Unneeded Software

Most PCs come shipped with unneeded software. Uninstall all of them. I'm sure there are better alternatives to those software. For example, my PC came shipped from hp with lots of bloatware such as HP Image Zone, Norton AntiVirus 2004, Record Now! CD & DVD Burning software etc. I uninstalled all of them and replaced them with better software like Picasa and Nero.

3. Keep Only One Browser

This is part of the getting rid of unneeded applications but I decided to separate it because so many people have 3, or even 4 browsers installed on their computer. I used to do this; I used to have Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. Now I only have Mozilla Firefox. Yes, I even removed Internet Explorer!

Now you might be wondering how do I update Windows without Internet Explorer, right? Here's how I do it, and you can too: To update Windows from within Firefox, just download the IE Tab add-on. Using that plugin, you can access IE only sites like Windows Update with ease.

4. Get an All-in-One Solution for Your IM Needs

I'm guessing that most of you have at least 2 IM clients installed. Uninstall all of them. Instead, get Digsby. Digsby is an All-in-One solution for your social media and IM needs.

5. Limit the Programs that Start Automatically

The programs that load automatically after your Windows starts can severely cripple the load time. To reduce the number of programs that start auto-load, download Revo Uninstaller. Disable the autoloading of applications carefully......

Privacy has always been a major concern for BitTorrent users and there are only a few ways to remain anonymous. How it all Starts

BitTorrent starts with chopping a file into small pieces, the person who starts sharing the file (initial seed) sends those small pieces to available peers in the swarm. The BitTorrent protocol makes sure that the seed sends a unique piece to everyone, so they can immediately exchange these pieces with each other.

Thus, the great advantage is that everyone starts sharing pieces of the file right away.

Fair trading

Once you have a little piece of the file, your BitTorrent client tries to find other people who might be interested in the pieces you have. A recently launched Facebook application for uTorrent makes it easy to manage your torrents when you're away from your desktop computer. In addition, the application can also search your favorite BitTorrent sites from Facebook, and allows you to add new torrents remotely

Previously, we have reported on other WebUI tools, such as uTorrent widgets, a mobile version of uTorrent, and even an iPhone compatible WebUI. The Facebook application for uTorrent is another example of how the WebUI can be used to integrate uTorrent into other applications.

The uFacebook home page lists all the torrents that are loaded in uTorrent, including statistics such as the current upload and download speed of each file. Once the application is installed, you can remotely start, stop, delete, add, and even search torrents, no matter where you are. That is, if your PC is turned on with uTorrent running.

uFacebook is developed and maintained by the same people who run the BitTorrent meta-search engine Morrent. In addition to this app, the Morrent team has also developed a uTorrent WebUI for the iPhone, and a gadget for the Windows sidebar.

If you want to give it a try, make sure you have enabled the WebUI. To do so, go to Options ,> Preferences ,> Advanced ,> WebUI, and enter you details there. Detailed instructions on how to install the Facebook application, and how to configure the WebUI can be found here.

The uTorrent WebUI can be used to access uTorrent from an external computer. This also opens the possibility to handle your torrents from your browser window. We've discovered a Firefox extension that makes using the WebUI a lot easier.

The Firefox extension for uTorrent allows you to drag and drop .torrent links onto the WebUI window and shows the current upload and download speed in the status bar.

The upload and download speed remains visible if you close the WebUI screen. The extension works fine in Firefox 2.0.

In order to use the Firefox extension you need to install the WebUI, and have uTorrent up and running. Once you've installed the extension, you need to enter your settings (IP address, port & password) in the configuration screen of the Firefox extension and you're ready to go.

The iPhone has no built-in BitTorrent client yet, but you can use it to access uTorrent remotely from anywhere in the world. The iPhone web interface for uTorrent makes it easy to manage your torrents when you're away from your desktop computer.

The iPhone UI for uTorrent can be used to access uTorrent from your iPhone when you're away from your computer. The interface is optimized for the iPhone and uses the regular uTorrent WebUI. At the moment the iPhone UI lets you pause, resume and add new torrents.

The iPhone UI also shows some status info such as the download/upload speed and the number of seeds and peers connected to the torrent, which should be sufficient to track the progress of your downloads.

The features of the iPhone UI for uTorrent are nowhere near those of the regular WebUI, but it does run smoothly on any iPhone. It requires the uTorrent WebUI to be installed in order to get it running, detailed installation instructions can be found at the iPhone UI homepage.

If you want to run uTorrent on a mobile phone other than the iPhone you could give uTorrent mUI a try. It looks less sleek than the iPhone UI, but the interface will allow you to remotely control your torrents from just about any mobile browser.

Perhaps it's time for Apple or other iPhone developers come up with a full featured BitTorrent client for the iPhone?

Featurewise, SymTorrent is still quite basic. At this point it can't compete with most PC clients, but it is still good enough for the occasional downloader. The latest SymTorrent version (1.21) was released a couple of days ago, and now includes support for multi-tracker torrents.

BitTorrent is going beyond your desktop computer. In the future we will see more and more products that enable BitTorrent users to download content without using their PC. BitTorrent founder Bram Cohen said that one of the reasons BitTorrent Inc acquired uTorrent was to port it to embedded systems on TVs, cellphones, and other non-PC platforms. The Taiwanese company IAdea already developed a "BitTorrent microprocessor", that enables hardware manufacturers to create .torrent compatible devices.

I wonder if the iPhone will come with a BitTorrent client...
