Carved takes as its jumping-off point a real-life Japanese legend about the "slit-mouthed woman," a ghost whose face has been grotesquely disfigured by a jealous husband. When a series of children disappear, Kanegawa locals blame the kidnappings on the mythical slit-mouthed woman, and it turns out that they're right—but not in the ways they had thought. Though the plot takes off in several directions, Carved's main focus is the relationship between Yamazaki, a teacher who sees one of her students abducted by the ghost, and Matsuzaki, a colleague who believes the slit-mouthed woman may be the spirit of his own abusive mother. Together, the teachers head out in pursuit of the truth after the authorities dismiss Yamazaki's eyewitness testimony, and they discover the horrible truth behind the missing kids. Director Koji Shiraishi doesn't go for a lot of typical shock effects, because he doesn't need to—in their place he works the audience over by exploiting our fear of seeing horrible things happen to children.
