Following a mishap in an experiment, a professor?s daughter, Kurau, was
obliterated into light for a moment before reforming back to whole.
However, after this incident the consciousness of the original Kurau
was merged with a foreign consciousness which identified itself as
Rynax ? an entity which at best can be described as pure energy
deriving from a collective ?wave existence?.
The general story line goes along the lines how Kurau, ten years after
the incident, is on the lam and being stalked by a research agency
which seeks to harness her uniqueness for their own agenda. There are
characters in the show which could potentially irate viewers with their
behavior (such as incessant whining and constant fishing for
self-pity). However, in my view these and the story line of this show
are just layers that obscure the many beautiful aspects (at least to
me) of the show.
The opening song ?Natsukashii Umi?(Nostalgic sea), a light upbeat tune
is sung by Arai Akino. The ending song ?Moonlight? by S.E.N.S has a
nostalgic haunting tune to it.
A bit of analysis is required to appreciate, the main character Kurau.
There is the original Kurau before the incident, where a single
consciousness dwells in a single physical form (i.e the body of the
girl Kurau) and there is the new Kurau after the incident, where two
consciousness (one of them, the consciousness of the entity called
Rynax) merged and share the physical body of Kurau.
It can be very confusing at times to the viewer, because at times one
is left to wonder if the thought processes of Kurau is a result of the
original Kurau consciousness or because of the new ?merged? Kurau. The
character Kurau often make references to the original Kurau, which seem
to imply that it's not the original Kurau who is in control of her
mind. On the other hand the viewer also see the character Kurau making
references to the Rynax within her, implying that its the original
consciousness of Kurau in control.
In my view the best way to appreciate the character Kurau is to not see
her as someone exhibiting some sort of split personality, but rather as
an amalgamation of two personalities that have merged to become a
compound personality. A compound personality who is able to make the
distinction of its own individual personality parts.
Although personally interpretive, the show seems to suggest that even
though when one is surrounded by caring people, a heart in genuine
solitude will always unconsciously feel that there is something lacking
which they are unable to define, let alone resolve. The only thing left
for such individuals to do is to rely on every ounce of their courage
and silent resilience in their heart to carry on living, until they
find their kindred spirit where they can be whole again. If one is
unable to find the strength to do so, severe depression which could
take the form of anger, sadness, absolute loneliness, and suicide often
results. These are highlighted in the various elements strewn
throughout the show. The show?s concept of pairs (Tsui) further
enforces the idea of being truly whole, is to find one?s true half and
not so much as being surrounded by heaps of people.
As I interpret it, this show has a unique way on how the idea of ?love?
is expressed. The love between pairs- Tsui (in this case, Kurau and
Chirstmas) is free of sexual connotation, different from those which
one finds in sisterly love, nor is it the kind of love where one
imposes a value system on another because of some sort of agreement to
?preserve? their love for each other. It would seem an injustice if I
attempt to describe how this show seems to express the idea of love to
me. I think viewers with their own unique experiences would have their
own perceptions about this.
The epiphany moment for me is one of the final scenes in the final
episode. Christmas was sitting in solitude in her nightgown on a grassy
hill, staring at the night sky with fireflies flitting around her, and
then she eventually floats up to the night sky. That scene to me sums
up the very essence of the Kurau and all other events in the show seem
like layers masking the essence of this very moment in the scene. The
series have has a nice ending to it. However, for some reason this show
stirred in me genuinely sadness. The kind of sadness that one has no
language or symbolism to describe, but is just understood because one
has internalize it as the truth.
For that I shall overlook all the other faults of Kurau Phantom Memory and give it a perfect score.
