The World Health Organization’s World Health Day conference in Singapore on April 2 will focus on global health threats. As the possibility of diseases spreading across national borders becomes greater, here’s what you can do to keep safe:

• Only eat well-cooked food or personally prepared fruits and vegetables, urges the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US.

• Drink only bottled or boiled water or carbonated drinks from sources you trust.

• Do not touch animals, especially monkeys, dogs and cats, to avoid bites and serious diseases. In areas with avian influenza (bird flu), avoid poultry farms, bird markets, and other places where live poultry is raised or kept.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are unavailable and your hands are not visibly dirty, use alcohol-based hand gel (with at least 60% alcohol) to clean your hands.
