Woman’s Nocturnal Emission (Wet Dreams)

Om Salmah, the Mother of believers,* said: “Om Solaym, Abou Talaha’s wife, came to the Prophet PBUH and said: ‘Oh Prophet, Allah does not feel shy of the truth. Does a female have to wash up if she has a nocturnal sex dream?’ The Prophet PBUH said: ‘Yes, if she sees the fluid.’” “Washing Up” Sahih Al-Bukhari. 282.

What is meant by “the fluid” in the Hadeeth is the lubrication as a result of sexual stimulation, released from the bartholin glands on the sides of the two lips of the vagina. Thus, this is the lubrication, which a women feels in her wet dream or nocturnal sex dreams. This lubrication causes the slipperiness or wetness of the vagina in anticipation of sex. It is also increased by other lubrications produced in the neck of the uterus or vagina. However, these lubrications have no fertilizing elements. (Al-Qarar Al-Makeen:143).

Moreover, Imam Musslem in his narration said, “Om Salamah said addressing Om Solaym ‘Om Solaym, you have disgraced women!’ This is because refraining such an issue is one of women’s nature, for such matter is a sign of their high libido for men.’” (See Fateh Al-Bari 1:389).

Translator’s Note: Any lady who was married to Prophet Muhammad PBUH was nicknamed as Om Al-Mu’mineen (literally the mother of believers). Allah named the Prophet’s as such; Allah says,“ The Prophet is closer To the Believers than Their own selves, And his wives are Their Mothers” (33:6). The name denotes something divine and highly sacred. The wives of the Prophet PBUH used to narrate extracts of the Prophet’s life as well as Hadeeths upon which decisions, (Islamic Fatawa) advice or consultation, etc were based and taught to Muslims. They were a source of knowledge and used to even tutor or teach Muslims and give the right decision with respect to some matters they knew and Muslims did not. The name also connotes the high position of the named woman among Muslims. They were really mothers as they were divinely not allowed to be married to any Muslim after the prophet’s death
