9.9/10 STARS
It opens eerily enough. The guitar chords and effects are reminiscent
of the Lateralus album. The vocals are low pitched and well balanced
with the guitars with Adam clearly having a more leading sound out
front. A great opening track. Not as hard hitting as "Stinkfist," but
more along the lines of "The Grudge" in terms of chords and timing. The lyrics are great as always, focusing on the human emphasis on
tragedy and the kind of attention that always seems to gravitate
towards it. I don't know how they do it, but TOOL just always sounds like the
heaviest, deepest (in terms of pitch & chords) band. They do make it work though.
But the actual movie is an entirely different story. The video itself is pretty awesome (if I do say so myself), although I did like Tool's earlier
videos better (Schism, Stinkfist, Parabola). It was entirely computer
generated, and does contain many cool and thought provoking scenes. I
just don't think the animation is very good during some parts, and I
found the video actually started to get boring at some points. For the
most part it is a great video though, and many other Tool fans should like it.
The use of Alex Grey's (my hero - woot woot) art work, paticularily his main piece that is pictured behind Alex Grey in the photo above, really enhanced the visual experience of "Vicarous". It truly amazing to take an extordinary work fo art and change it into a symbolic 3D perspective.
As for the "Making of" documentary... it is not so good. The band is
not involved in it at all. They just interview a bunch of people that
worked on the video, but do we get any input from Director Adam Jones?
Nope. Nothing. Why the hell would they not interview some of the band
members? and why did they get a commentary of some random comedian whom I ahve never heard of?
And just for your information, this disc DOES NOT contain any live footage.
There IS NOT a secret code or anything, that is just a rumour started
by some prankster. Please don't buy this disc expecting live footage,
because it is simply not there. Also, the video CAN NOT be viewed in 3D
(only the package artwork can, much like 10000 Days).
If you are a Tool fan, then of course you need to buy this. I mostly
wanted people to know the truth about the live footage. There isn't
any. At least the Vicarious video is pretty good.
NOTE: I didn't download this video, because...well...its just one of those things you just have to buy. I recommend it!
