We refer to your query on slow connection issue using Peer-to-peer (P2P) application, we understand such complications occured while you are accessing any P2P activities. P2P traffic is actually choking up local broadband lines with 20% of users utilising 80% of the total bandwidth. As the number of local broadband subscribers increases, more users are expected to use P2P applications such as Kazaa and Bit Torrent to transfer files online.
Such applications are often left on all day so they use much more bandwidth compared to users who merely use the Internet to surf or chat. Other countries with high broadband penetration also faced similar problems because "broadband users have a tendency to abuse bandwidth."
Please be informed that we are not against our customers using P2P. However, it is an unfair situation which needs to be addressed, as we cannot upgrade our infrastructure (merely) for the benefit of the minority. We are so sorry to inform you that we have some kind of rate limit control on that link. The main objective of putting the rate limit control on some of our links is to reduce the severity of congestion so that the quality of service can still be maintained for all subscribers.
This control is seen as very vital now due to the nature of P2P which consumes every ounce of bandwidth available and if left uncontrolled will congest the link so bad that it'll start to affect other application/traffic. An unfortunate side effect of this rate limiting mechanism is that it has no way to differentiate between types of traffic and will just rate limit everything, be it mail, web browsing, ftp or video streaming.
