One additional, lesser known format of interest is Video CD (VCD.) It is a standard for storing video content on Compact Discs. It's not very popular in North America, but is common in Europe and very poplular in Asia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCD)
Little known fact is most DVD players also play VCDs.
I knew of, but never met Mr. Hall during my DEC days in the 90's. I'd say he single-handedly influenced Linux & Open Source at DEC, spearheading Linux development on Alpha platforms.
