Not long ago, I discovered a mesmerizing field in the musical spectrum that some call post-rock. The term does little to accurately describe the music and it involve heterogeneous bands with not many common grounds, but it can be said post-rock music is usually instrumental, based in the use of an impressive variety of dynamics, timbres and textures; the songs are usually long and they mix elements of rock, ambient, jazz and minimalism.
My favourite bands in this field are by far Mono, Mogwai, Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky; today i´ll recommend you the latter.
Explosions In The Sky is a band from the US playing a style of music which catches my attention the most: instrumental songs with a core melody that gets richer with every passing second by adding different timbres and specially by progressively changing the dynamics of the notes from still soothing notes to a raging spasm of distortion. Experimentation is clearly the goal with this music and maybe the more interesting aspect is there are no limits in what can be add, resulting in shapeshifting never boring songs.
Mainstream music followers will lack the capacity to appreciate the maze of soundscapes that is Explosions In The Sky, but once in a while you can reach people with a deeper sense of music who can realize easily they are in the presence of greatness. For those of you who can see beyond the conventional, i say I´m jealous of the feeling you´ll get when discovering transcendental music because I felt it the first time i listened to them...enjoy it...
