The folk/viking metal arena isn´t my favorite subgenre of metal. In fact, i find it very boring and unimaginative. Few bands really stand out of the rest, for example Ensiferum and their self-title master piece. Now, I want to bring your attention to a folk metal act named Asmegin. They´re from Norway and so far they´ve released just one studio album called "Hin Vordende Sod & Sø".
This album is a real weird gem, i´ll explain why. Folk/Viking metal bands usually base their music in death metal and they add the "folk" elements (violins, chorus, wind instruments, viking mythology lyrics, etc.), the result sometimes is great, other times not so much. On the other hand, Asmegin´s music has a very black metal flavor to it (maybe that´s because they´re from Norway after all!) what definitely takes them apart from the bunch. All the black elements are there (double bass attack, cold crushing guitars, harsh vocals, obscure atmosphere) blend with violins, accordion, mellotron, piano, angelic clean female vocals (courtesy of Sareeta) and Hey! Hey! chorus, all working in perfect sinergy to form a mesmerizing and fucking innovative album. Other distinctive feature is the unique vocals of Lars Nedland (Solefald, Age Of Silence, Borknagar), a man that leaves his mark in every project he gets into with his clean, hard to describe but unmistakable voice.
There you have it, a folk/viking album that is so original and just fucking great that will give you the chills. Nobody should past this album by, so don´t.
