Band: Nightwish
Album: "Dark Passion Play" (2007)
Genre: Symphonic Metal
Well, many people speculated that Tarja´s departure from Nightwish would be the end of the band. To me it was, not because of the change of vocalist but for what Nightwish has become in this album title "Dark Passion Play".
It seems like the angel of death has become passionate for gothic/symphonic metal bands. I almost can not stand another mourning. All my favorites bands of the past have become cheesy, commercial and totally disgusting shadows of their past selves. Just take a look at this names: Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, After Forever, Within Temptation, Sirenia and recently: Nightwish. All those bands are long dead for me, and it´s just fucking sad.
Returning to our main subject, Dark Passion Play shows a "new" Nightwish, to me it shows a group of very good musicians just trying too hard to do something different. They added a grandiose background, the keyboards lost their leading role of the past albums to maintain that background. The guitar work is simpler, and it is there just to accompany the leading role of the female voice, more fit for pop and other shit than it does for metal. Do I prefer Tarja? Absolutely. I think that she left a big hole that Anette Olzon could not fill. Her voice it´s just too damn middle range and average. And don´t get me started on the pseudo-agressiveness that they try to accomplish in the song "Master Passion Greed", come on!!! It is so patetic that I want to destroy the stereo every time I listen to it.
Another great band has fallen, and all we can do is to find shelter in the great previous albums and move on.
If you like commercial, easily digestible music, this is for you. If you don´t know the band at all do not start with this album, you can better check out their master piece "Oceanborn" and then you can compare.
Let me know what you think.
Rest in Peace Nightwish.
Song: Amaranth
Baptized with a perfect name
The doubting one by heart
Alone without himself
War between him and the day
Need someone to blame
In the end, little he can do alone
You believe but what you see?
You receive but what you give?
Caress the one, the never-fading
rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow
Caress the one, the hiding amaranth
In a land of the daybreak
Apart from the wandering pack
In this brief flight of time we reach
For the ones, whoever dare
You believe but what you see?
You receive but what you give?
Caress the one, the never-fading
rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow
Caress the one, the hiding amaranth
In a land of the daybreak
Reaching, searching for something untouched
Hearing voices of the never-fading calling
Caress the one, the never-fading
rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow
Caress the one, the hiding amaranth
In a land of the daybreak
