Other than listening to metal, I enjoy a lot reading and one of my favourite authors is Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), writer, poet and dramatist. He was a very hard critic of the XIX century's society and his weapons were a relentless sarcasm and ironic sense of humour, which lead him to write lots of celebrated quotes. Some of his most famous works are the plays "A Woman of No Importance", "The Importance of Being Earnest", "Lady Windermere's Fan" and "An Ideal Husband"; and his only novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray".
The saddest thing is that most of the things he criticized back in his time can still be applied to modern society as well, an awful truth which shows that human kind is not fond of evolution at all.
Here are some of his quotes for you to think about:
Men and Women
"A man's face is his autobiography. A woman's face is her work of fiction."
"All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his."
"As long as a woman can look ten years younger than her own daughter, she is perfectly satisfied."
"Between men and women there is no friendship possible. There is passion, enmity, worship, love, but no friendship."
"I see when men love women. They give them but a little of their lives. But women when they love give everything."
"Men always want to be a woman's first love - women like to be a man's last romance."
Love, Marriage and Friendship
"A true friend stabs you in the front."
"Deceiving others. That is what the world calls a romance."
"A man can be happy with any woman, as long as he does not love her."
"Bigamy is having one wife too many. Monogamy is the same."
"One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry."
"How marriage ruins a man! It is as demoralizing as cigarettes, and far more expensive."
"In married life three is company and two none."
"Men marry because they are tired; women, because they are curious; both are disappointed."
Miscellaneous
"A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing."
"A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal."
"A man who does not think for himself does not think at all."
"An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all."
"Always forgive your enemies - nothing annoys them so much."
"Ambition is the last refuge of the failure."
"America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between."
"Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught."
"Everybody who is incapable of learning has taken to teaching."
"Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes."
"Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months."
"I am not young enough to know everything."
"I sometimes think that God in creating man somewhat overestimated his ability."
"It is better to be beautiful than to be good. But... it is better to be good than to be ugly."
"It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating."
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
