Most
metalheads roaming around began their romance with metal music while listening
to either heavy metal or power metal. That is a fact. In my case, I started my
road through transcendental music with grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam), moved
towards heavy metal (Iron Maiden, Accept, Judas Priest) and ended up for quite
some time listening to power metal (Helloween, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica,
Kamelot, Hammerfall). Those were my initial steps into metal music. At the
beginning, it is hard to shake off the vocal based way of listening, so it is
logical that the first baby steps are taken into a field of the metal spectrum
that uses clean melodic vocals.
When I
finally got the ear to appreciate the instruments behind the voice, power metal
lost its magic. The gayish ballads, weak drumming and high pitch chanting
became unbearable and the more technical and progressive music found its way
into my stereo. So now, after years of being into metal music, there are just a
few power metal bands that I still listen to regularly and with respect: Iced
Earth, Avantasia, Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards, Warmen, Sinergy and
Nevermore. The reason: they all take power metal to a whole different level.
My
favourite of the list is Nevermore, a band lead by a singular vocalist named
Warrel Dane. He is the pillar of the band to such degree that if he one day
decides to leave the band, Nevermore would simply cease to exist (same as many
irreplaceable lead singers as ex-Nightwish Tarja and Mathew Barlow from Iced
Earth). His unique vocal style is of the love it or hate it kind, but to my
ears he's an outstanding singer. Nevermore performs power metal that is beyond
the usual stuff we get everyday, so well played and ultimately progressive in
its complexity that some reviewers are not too happy with labelling this as
simply power metal. Labels aside, Nevermore delivers a great album after
another since their debut LP, improving their style and reminding the world
that power metal can be interesting even to the more demanding listeners...

Song: "The Heart Collector" from "Dead Heart In A Dead World"
To see the actor without tears
Dark rivers carve the years between the lines
of self control
In my psychotic karmic fear, I own your tears
anyway
And I am you and we are not afraid
And we won't be here for long
The heart collector sings his song that's slowly
boiling over
Nevermore to feel the pain
The heart collector sang
And I won't be feeling hollow for so long
Nevermore to feel the pain
The words fall out like fire
Just believe when you can't believe anymore
The stage is empty now
I hope we hold and cannot allow
The corrupt eclectic takes his fatal bow
And we won't be here for long
The heart collector sings his song again
Nevermore to feel the pain
The heart collector sang
And I won't be feeling hollow for so long
Nevermore to feel the pain
The words fall out like fire
Just believe when you can't believe anymore
