The band
that set the standards of good power metal goes by the name Iced Earth. The
finest example of United States´ school of power metal, Iced Earth is the brain
child of guitarist Jon Schaffer, not vainly nicknamed "the riff machine"
because of his amazing skills and creativity in the rhythm guitar. The band
reached its dream formation when the irreplaceable vocalist Matt Barlow joined
in the album "Burnt Offerings". With him on the line-up, Iced Earth released
high quality LPs non stop (my favourite is "Something Wicked This Way Comes").
They demonstrated that melody, power, aggressiveness and ballads can live in
perfect harmony by creating metal hymns with slow tempo and catchy chorus
(examples of metal hymns are "Melancholy", "Watching Over Me" and "Blessed Are
You"). Barlow left the band in 2003 and was replaced by Tim Owens. After two
albums with the new vocalist, fans all around expressed how much Matt was
missed, until he finally decided to return to the band this year and now they
are working in a new and most expected album.
