A band playing melodic death metal with northern mythology lyrics...sounds pretty average, right?...well!...you are wrong!...
One could write such a simplistic description about Sweden's Amon Amarth, but one would not even begin to capture the might of this band. This is not another random melodic act, this is in my humble opinion the second best group playing this style of music, only exceeded by the awesome Kalmah.
Amon Amarth has a sound of its own. The first thing that came to my attention when I first listen to their music was the great amount of one string melodies in the songs. Catchy as hell, they are simple melodies yet very memorable ones, which give the music an epic characteristic. They are like little odes to the gods. But this is death metal! What about brutality?...Oh!, you won't be disappointed!...the utterly powerful drumming, the heavily distorted rhythm guitars and the brutal grunts make sure you have a blast of infernal energy and rage. All those features combined with the occasional guitar soloing build an incredible listening experience you won't be able to get out of your head.
Critics often mention the lack of progression in the band's albums, but for me that's not a problem at all. It is true you can practically interchange one album with the other because they all are equally enjoyable and completely good, but I wonder... why the hell would they want to change if they are so talented playing this style?
