Transformers 2 Is The Biggest Wednesday Movie Of All Time

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the second biggest movie of all time. On Wednesday, buoyed by $16 million made at midnight showings, the film grossed a whopping $60 million in a single day. One Wednesday, $60 million dollars. That’s more than most of this year’s films have made in their entire opening weekend. It also puts Revenge of the Fallen in an elite class with The Dark Knight, the only film ever to earn more than Michael Bay’s robot movie. The Dark Knight holds the top spot, with $67 million earned in one day.
Though it’s only the second biggest opening of all time, Revenge of the Fallen does now hold the record for biggest Wednesday of all time, and by a large margin. The previous champ was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with only $44 million.
So just how much is this Autobot monstrosity going to make? Usually bad reviews, while they have no impact on the opening box office of a film like this, mean diminishing returns as audiences see it and then don’t go back because, well it’s a bad film. In this case that seems unlikely since the disconnect between moviegoers and critics is huge. Even though almost every reviewer of every walk of life hated it, audience ratings for Transformers 2 have been through the roof. That may be bad news for Ice Age 3 and Public Enemies, set to open on July 1st when there’s every reason to believe Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen may still be going strong.
