Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did well at the box office this past weekend, enough to earn it seventh on the all time list. But in IMAX, it did even better.
The IMAX Corporation announced today that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The IMAX Experience recorded the biggest opening for an IMAX movie in history. Michael Bay’s robot smashing juggernaut was presented with select scenes filmed specifically in IMAX and as a result earned $14.4 million coming from 169 IMAX theatres domestically.
That’s great news for IMAX, though maybe not such good news for us since odds are that those figures also include their new fake IMAX theaters which aren’t IMAX theaters at all, but regular theaters with the IMAX name slapped on them. It probably does and if it does, then making this kind of money even after they’ve been outed for scamming moviegoers is only going to make them cocky. Why make real IMAX theaters when you can just slap the IMAX name on anything and make tons of money?
Of course the success of Revenge of the Fallen has less to do with IMAX and more to do with Michael Bay’s movie. Project it on an old sheet behind an Applebees and you’ll be able to sell tickets. People seem to be pretty excited about this Transformers thing.
