Hey, did you hear-- Tom Arnold is back! The Comedian, for some unknown reason, was the subject of a New York Times profile over the weekend, in which no less than Judd Apatow attested to Arnold's comedic timing and Arnold recounted his whole checkered past in show business. In the last paragraph of the piece, though, Arnold dropped the bomb about his next project. Somehow, Tom Arnold is making a movie with James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“All I know is Jim Cameron’s making it and Arnold and I are going to be in it, and it starts shooting in 14 months, the day after Arnold stops being governor of California." Whoah! And before you ask-- "It’s not going to be called True Lies II,but it might as well be. I can live with that.” Wait, what?? Has Cameron been so good at tubthumping Avatar, that no one has managed to ask him about his next project, and no one has gotten this information out of him? Can Cameron even know what he's going to do next until he finds out whether or not Avatar changes the world, as he's been promising for the last five years?
This is bizarre news, and I'm hoping some clarification comes out of the woodwork at some point. As Russ Fischer points out at Slashfilm, Arnold had spent the previous three pages of the article saying plenty of crazy stuff, and this might just be him bringing up a project that was pitched 10 years ago and hasn't been mentioned since. I'm kind of torn between wanting to see what kind of craziness Cameron might come up with, and seeing something that's actually a worthy technological follow-up to Avatar. Maybe that movie can involve Tom Arnold, and everyone can win.
