The last two comedies that tried to do a takeoff on the Bible, Evan Almighty and The Ten, didn’t exactly turn out too well. But Harold Ramis’ Year One has a secret weapon neither of those films had. He fights crime, he handle weaponry, and he gets the ladies: he is McLovin.
Yes, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, better known as Fogel a.k.a. McLovin from this summer’s Superbad, is joining the cast of another Judd Apatow-produced comedy. Directed by Ramis, who played Seth Rogen’s father in Knocked Up and also made Caddyshack and Groundhog Day, it’s a comedy with a super-secret plot set in Biblical times. Ramis also wrote the script with Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg.
Mintz-Plasse’s Superbad co-star Michael Cera was already set to star in the project, alongside Jack Black. Oliver Platt, who’s been showing off his comedic chops lately, and David Cross are also in talks to join the cast. Platt will reportedly play a high priest who wears platform shoes (weird detail but whatever), and Cross’s part, along with Mintz-Plasse’s, isn’t known.
This movie sounds impossibly bizarre, and if I were to take bets on when Judd Apatow’s empire finally produces a flop, this might be it (Ramis, after all, was also responsible for Analyze That and the Elizabeth Hurley bomb Bedazzled). Still, I have perhaps an illogical faith in Mintz-Plasse; I re-watched Superbad the other day and was delighted to find it just as hilarious as the first time around. It’s hard to imagine him and Michael Cera running around in robes and sandals, but for now I’m willing to maintain hope in Apatow Almighty.
