You can pretty much assume any movie that makes enough money is fair game for a sequel. Sometimes they don’t even have to make enough money – just have a big enough following. Studios will happily take fans or money, although both is preferred. Later this month we get living proof of that with Alien vs. Predator – Requiem, a sequel to the 2004 movie that disappointed fans, but still made a bunch of money.
No big surprise, it appears AvP-R is also a setup for a possible sequel according to directors Greg and Colin Strause. The directing duo told Shock Till You Drop that AvP-R leads to another picture and that, despite its American Midwestern setting, the next picture would feature a return to space.
In fact, the brothers are so adamant the franchise would have to return to space, I can’t help but think something must happen to Earth in AvP-R. Is it possible that our world just can’t take the war between alien entities?
As you might expect, the studio is going to wait to see how audiences respond to AvP-R, and I’m not talking about critically (although the buzz surrounding the sequel seems a lot better than the first picture ever had). So, if you want to see the Aliens and Predators take to the stars again, plan on paying to see AvP-R later this month.
