Guillermo Del Toro Still Mad About Mountains I don’t get it. Guillermo del Toro’s name is in the press again thanks to the possibility of the director heading up the Hobbit movies, and still del Toro is talking about his beloved H.P. Lovecraft adaptation – an adaptation that still has no backers. Come on del Toro – focus on the movie you can make instead of the movie you want to make!

Del Toro talked with the MTV Movies Blog about his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. The story tells the tale of a group of explorers who find a hidden city in Antarctica where ancient manifestations of fear and horror dwell. While del Toro seems almost obsessed with his dream project of bringing this story to the big screen, he admits that his script does incorporate some of his own ideas into the movie as well.

“It’s not hard to be faithful to Lovecraft because what is great about the novel is that it’s a compilation of really dry scientific annotations that happen to be annotating something really scary. There is no character or dramatic thread. You take those documents and you then create a story. If you were [just rigidly faithful] you would be doing a National Geographic special on a crew that disappeared in an exploration mission.”

The good news is that, despite adding his own touch to the story through his adaptation, del Toro doesn’t appear to have “Hollywoodized” the picture too much. For instance, the writer/director admits, “I know some people would like a happier ending but I’m happy with the ending there is.” Lovecraft’s stories rarely ended well for the protagonists, who frequently fell victim to forces larger than themselves. It’s good to hear del Toro will most likely incorporate that into his picture, assuming it ever gets made (and that the studio who makes it doesn’t interfere too much).

Frankly, I expect to hear this movie is green lit soon. Something tells me del Toro will put this picture on the negotiating table as part of his Hobbit paycheck. After all, the director has been wanting to make this picture for quite a while, so why not get it made as part of his payment for making New Line a lot of money with two of the most anticipated movies ever? That would also help del Toro make the movie he wants to make – it’s not likely New Line would interfere too much after the potential money The Hobbit could make.
