We’ve known for a while that Platinum Dunes is targeting several horror franchises for remakes, but actual development on those remakes has been held up for a while thanks to the writer’s strike. Now that the strike’s over, it’s time to get moving on these remakes. Hmmm, I think I just found a reason why I was enjoying the writer’s strike.
It looks like the first of Platinum Dunes’ planned films to move forward is the Marcus Nispel directed Friday the 13th. Nispel handled direction duties on the company’s remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and didn’t do too bad a job on that, so Friday the 13th is at least a little promising, although I still don’t get why a remake is needed when it’s so easy to add a number to the end and just call this another sequel.
The first cast member is in final negotiations to star in Friday the 13th. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supernatural star Jarad Padalecki is all but signed to star in the movie as the lead, a character who is investigating what has happened at Crystal Lake, stalking grounds for the iconic Jason Vorhees.
While I would have thought the studio would want to announce who was wearing the mask of Jason first, it’s no big surprise to see a teenage icon added to the picture so early, especially one with horror on his resume already. Besides Supernatural on the CW, Padalecki has already been stalked in the semi-horror remake House of Wax and the lesser known Cry Wolf.
Expect Padalecki to be the first of a flood of news surrounding this picture. Considering Platinum Dunes wants to have their Friday the 13th remake in theaters by February, Friday the 13th of next year, I expect we’ll be getting a lot of casting news soon as the project moves forward rapidly.
