In our two previous news items about Duplicity, both Josh and Rafe, mentioned Multiplicity, that shitty Michael Keaton movie. I’m going to try to avoid that trap and not mention Multiplicity at all. Nope, no Multiplicity references from me. Oh, crap.
Without mentioning Multiplicity, Variety says that Paul Giamatti has joined the Duplicity cast as a corporate CEO. Tom Wilkinson is a rival business tycoon and the two hire Julia Roberts and Clive Owen to spy on each other. Roberts and Owen are ex-spies who work for separate companies but share the same bed. Billy Bob Thornton may also join up as a businessman.
Although the addition of Giamatti makes a great cast sound even better, the movie was written and directed by Tony Gilroy. If he goes a bit more Bourne Ultimatium, which he wrote, then that should be fine. Unfortunately, if he makes this into someone sort of thought provoking borefest like Michael Clayton, his directorial debut, I’ll be pissed. I like Clive Owen and Giamatti, who previously worked together in the terrible Shoot ‘Em Up, and would like to see them in something good together. Please, Tony, go for something interesting and entertaining, rather than “important.”
