Blindness is one of the movies that Oscar watchers, and Julianne Moore fans especially, have been fervently awaiting. It's been kicking around for a while without a release date, but now it's set to be released in September, smack dab in the middle of Oscar season. It's directed by Fernando Meirelles, who made a huge splash with City of God and got lots of attention with his follow-up, The Constant Gardener. And Moore co-stars with Mark Ruffalo and Gael Garcia Bernal, all of them a good reason to see any given movie.
Now there's finally a trailer for the movie, up at FirstShowing.net, and we can finally get a better idea of the story beyond the chilling premise. It's based on a novel by Jose Saramago about a town in which all the residents mysteriously, suddenly go blind. Moore stars as one of the few people who are immune, and she tries to take care of her husband (Mark Ruffalo) while surviving the new, apocalyptic world.
The trailer makes the movie seem a lot more like a horror movie than a serious drama, but Moore seems to be bringing her acting A-game, and the trailer itself is stylish. Bernal is spied briefly in the trailer, but his role within the story is unclear. Sandra Oh also shows up, appearing to be a political figure. The trailer is called a “teaser” but has a whole lot of story information, which goes along with the current trend of giving away the whole movie in the trailer. I'm still definitely unclear on a whole lot of things, though, which is the sign of a good trailer to me. Check it out at First Showing and decide whether its a straight-up horror movie or classy Oscar bait-- or maybe both!
