Yes, yes, you’re all sick of remakes by now, but bear with me. There’s a remake coming up, but it’s of a movie you haven’t seen yet! And better yet, it’s not based on a crappy graphic novel or some heartwarming story about a boy and his dog. OK, it might be a heartwarming story, but it’s Italian, so it probably doesn’t suck.
The remake in question is called Everybody’s Fine and it’s based on an Italian movie called Stanno tutti bene, which came out in 1990. You know, back when Europeans made movies and Americans remade them? See, it’s a throwback! Variety reports that Robert De Niro will star as a man who has recently become a widower, and who realizes that, without his wife, he barely knows his children. He decides, in classic movie fashion, to take each of them individually on a road trip, and learns far more about them than he expected.
Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell and Drew Barrymore are playing the kids; all of them are reliable actors who could probably use a co-star like De Niro to get them more attention (provided De Niro is in “good” acting mode and not “hammy” acting mode). Funnily enough, Beckinsale and Rockwell played husband and wife in February’s Snow Angels, so this will be a slightly creepy reunion for them.
Kirk Jones, who made the very very funny Waking Ned Devine, is directing, which is another plus. All in all this is shaping up to look pretty good, though we all know where movies with promising casts have gone wrong in the past.
