Since Mike Myers has spent the last eight years doing nothing but providing the voice of a green ogre, the people most likely to see his new movie The Love Guru have probably forgotten he exists. Fair enough. He’ll try and combat that, though, by hosting the MTV Movie Awards on June 1, making an ass of himself and pleading with them, “Please find me funny! Please! I’ll do anything!”
“The 2008 MTV Movie Awards promises more over-the-top moments than ever before,” shouts the press release. They also have a quote from MTV Networks President Van Toffler that includes even more hyperbole: “The Love Guru
“Sure to spur yet another cultural movement?” Is there anything you could say that’s more likely to doom a movie? No matter what anyone tells me I refuse to believe that The Love Guru is anything but a disaster, and as dumb as MTV viewers might be, they’re definitely not that dumb. Cast Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake, play off offensive racial stereotypes all you want, but a turd is a turd.
Remember how the first Austin Powers was such a surprise, featuring virtually no stars and being ridiculous and hilarious? That’s what’s guaranteed not to happen with Love Guru with this amount of marketing and desperate promotion behind it. Myers may very well make a great awards show host, but it seems more likely he’ll remind viewers of why his comedic shtick went out of style in the first place.
