So here's an equation that doesn't make sense: Oscar-nominated, career-on-fire director + a movie that keeps getting delayed and no one seems to actually want to make. Yeah, who's surprised that didn't happen? Jason Reitman was on Howard Stern yesterday and told the host that he had been offered the Justice League of America movie-- you know, the one we constantly report on because it never actually seems to be in production.
Stern asked him, as anyone, would, how's the script? And Reitman, gentleman that he is, didn't say much. Slashfilm quotes Reitmans saying simply “Good. Fine. Then Reitman gives a pretty damn good reason for not wanting to direct the movie. ““What am I going to do with Justice League of America? So Basically I’ll make a movie that is not as good as X-Men, then I’ll be the guy who made a movie not as good as X-Men.”
Well, to be fair, Brett Ratner is the guy who made a movie not as good as X-Men-- it's called X-Men 3-- and he's still making movies. But still, good point. Reitman himself points out that he's established a kind of brand for himself-- ”Right now I’m thought of as a particular type of director”-- and it would be stupid to leave that behind so soon.
You gotta wonder how George Miller feels about all this. He's been fighting to get his movie into production, finding financing and tax breaks in Australia and all that, and now some kid is saying that he had dibs on the movie if he had wanted it. Really, though, George Miller can afford to go in all sorts of directions with his career, while Jason Reitman can't really. It seems like everything worked out the way it should have here, and it will work out even better if the damn movie ever gets made.
