It’s all about who you know in Hollywood. Writer/director Jason Reitman will be, well, writing and directing a movie for Montecito Pictures. Who is one of the two principals at Montecito? None other than Ivan Reitman, Jason’s father. This is nepotism at its very worst.
On second thought, since Jason just wrote and directed Juno, a big Academy Award nominated hit that made $130 million or something, and Ivan’s most recent hit, despite several subsequent efforts, was in 1994, maybe Ivan is the one in need of a little help. In either case, Variety says that Jason will adapt and direct Up in the Air, based on Walter Kirn’s book. This seems to be the project we mentioned in March. At that point he would only say that it was a book adaptation satire in the vein of Thank You For Smoking, but covering corporate rather than political subjects.
Up in the Air, by the guy who wrote “Thumbsucker”, follows a business executive who is trying to get to his one millionth frequent flyer mile. This is only area of happiness and the rest of his life is going in the toilet because of his focus on this dubious achievement. The younger Reitman had been working on a script when he got distracted by Juno. That worked out pretty well for him, so we’ll see if working for Dad’s company will bring about similar success.
