Ari Gold says you always start the next project before the last project hits theaters. Not so for director Bryan Singer, whose Superman Returns hits screens at the end of this month. He announced several years ago that his next picture would be an updated version of Logan’s Run, more true to the novel, but he recently told Dark Horizons that plan is now on hold.
In an interview, Singer stated At the moment I'm not, at the moment I'm buying myself sort of a vacation of the mind… I have to take a mental break and actually not have any scheduled demands. Something comes up, and on vacation so I'll probably want to go back to work at some point but for that movie, that's a huge movie, potentially a huge movie and I was not ready to dive into it.
Singer’s exhaustion came with the end of production on Superman Returns, as well as producing a mini-series for the Sci-Fi channel (“Triangle”) and serving as Executive Producer on the popular “House M.D.” A sequel for Superman has already been tentatively scheduled, although Singer isn’t sure he’ll be a part of it: I don't know . Unlike actors who sign multi-pictures, I do these things one at a time because you never know how you'll feel after you're done and you don't want to commit yourself so right now I just need to. We're discussing it, and we're discussing if and when that would be, and that's another reason why Logan's Run makes it difficult because of the scope of the two movies. I just don't know, I just don't know.
It’s a bit of a bummer to hear Singer is giving up on Logan, at least for now. I’m one of the rare people who love the original, but would love to see an updated version of the story as well. Singer has already proven with the X-Men franchise how well he can handle this sort of material, although we’ll have to wait until the end of the month to see how he can fare with a non-mutant super-hero story.
