It's beginning to seem more and more certain that despite his vague protestions to the contrary, director and newly risen geek god J.J. Abrams is about to take a big dump on long time Trek fans and screw over decades worth of established continuity and make his upcoming new Star Trek movie a retarded reboot of the franchise featuring a young Kirk and Spock hanging out, drinking beer, and hitting on chicks. Well, at least one of them will be doing that. Spock will probably spend a lot of time caressing his 3D chess set.
With that bit of rumor about the nature of the film refusing to completely go away, then it's time to start wondering who the heck Abrams is going to find to play James Kirk. JoBlo has dug up something on just that front, with a story from the confusing website for The Insider that claims J.J. wants Matt Damon as a young version of the legendary Captain Kirk.
The story goes that Abrams wants him, and has even gone so far as to contact William Shatner seeking his blessing. I love Shatner, but he'll give his blessing to just about anything if there's a couple thousand bucks in it. I'm not sure that means much.
Even if Abrams really wants him though, that doesn't mean Damon would want to be any part of it. What's more, casting Damon seems kind of a confusing move if he's trying to make a movie about a younger version of Kirk and Spock than we've seen before. Matt is pretty close to the same age Shatner was when the original series debut. Actually, he's a little bit older.
Maybe the fact that he's interested in someone Matt's age instead of saya€| Paul Walker gives some sort of hope that he'll stay away from continuity screwing. There's always that other rumor that the movie won't be some bizarre Starfleet Academy film, but instead a telling of Kirk and Spock's first meeting about the Enterprise when Jim Kirk first took command.
If that's the way Abrams is going, I think that's something Star Trek fans can stomach, even if he does insist on recasting Kirk and Spock. At least that idea wouldn't be stomping on continuity, and so much the better if he can get a quality actor like Damon involved in it.
