Well it looks like all the marketing hype from Fox about X-Men: The Last Stand being the final X movie was just that: hype. X-Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has already been out and talking to the LA Daily News about doing a fourth one. Before I saw X-Men 3, news that it wasn’t the last would have made me happy, now I’m pretty disinterested, knowing that no doubt Ratner or someone even worse will be in charge of it. But it’ll probably take a Batman & Robin X-quivalent to totally kill this particular franchise. It’s making too much money to quit.
Donner talked a bit about who they have signed already and who they’ll need to work on in order to get them back. The good news is that all the new cast members are already signed for another film. So they’ll have no problem getting Kelsey Grammer again. Great news, since he’s the one bright spot in the entire third film. The bad news is that none of the older cast members are already locked in… and signing the likes of Ian McKellan, Halle Berry, and Hugh Jackman to another movie deal could now prove to be a pretty expensive proposition.
But, it doesn’t sound like Fox is in any particular rush to get going on that fourth movie. Donner says their focus for now is on Hugh Jackman’s solo spin-off Wolverine. They can’t start until Hugh finishes a Baz Luhrman movie he’s locked into, but she says, “We have the script and are working on it.” While they wait, they’re still plugging away at the Young Magneto movie we’ve been hearing about.
X3 made a lot of money, so I guess people are still interested. But then Step Up made a lot of money this past weekend too. Hey, here’s a thought. Can we cast Channing Tatum as some sort of mutant? Make sure it’s a sexy one. Can we modify the X-Men uniform to incorporate a variety of tight, dirty, tank tops?
