LOS ANGELES - Oscar-winning special effects and makeup artist Stan Winston, whose best-known work includes the Terminator and Jurassic Park movies, has died at age 62, his studio said on Monday.
Winston, a leading figure in Hollywood imagery who helped craft some of modern cinema's most breathtaking creatures, died at home on Sunday surrounded by family after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, a cancer of blood plasma cells, a spokeswoman for the Stan Winston Studio said.
Having collaborated with filmmaker James Cameron on the terrifying monsters of Aliens and the killer cyborgs of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, some of Winston's most recent work was on display in Marvel Studios' superhero blockbuster Iron Man.
Winston also created the live-action dinosaurs for Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park and its sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
In the makeup department, Winston worked with director Tim Burton to create the bizarre, shear-fingered looks of Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands and Danny DeVito's grotesque Penguin guise in Batman Returns.
Winston's body of work earned 10 Academy Award nominations in all, with four wins--Oscars for visual effects and makeup in Terminator 2 and two more visual effects Oscars for Aliens, and Jurassic Park.
