Everyone knows by now that Warner Brothers has greenlit a sequel to Superman Returns. But the question is, why? The guys over at The Movie Blog caught the latest edition of MovieHole's Caffeinated Clint column (which I usually make it a point not to miss, figures), in which Clint alleges that part of the reason Warners is pushing more Superman is because they're still interested in doing that long rumored Batman vs Superman teamup movie.
The plan for it was always to give the heroes a couple of solo adventures first, and then bring them both together for one big movie. Apparently Brandon Routh and Christian Bale have even met to discuss it. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall for that conversation? Do you think it turned into a geeky argument over who could beat up who? I have an incredibly tough time imagining Christian Bale geeking out.
Before there was Batman Begins and Superman Returns, Batman vs. Superman was rumored to be the next superhero project at the WB. They even had a script, and Wolfgang Peterson was attached to direct. Obviously, it never went anywhere and Warner Brothers went the Bryan Singer/Chris Nolan route instead.
But the project is still on the company's mind. If the next round of Batman and Superman movies does well, we could actually see a Superman/Batman battle on screen.
