Could Katie Holmes' association with Tom Cruise be killing her chance at Oscar glory? That's the question being posed today by the guys over at Defamer.com. As evidence they point to the fact that her name has been left off the cover of Oscar screeners for the movie Thank You For Smoking, and now the speculation has started. Did Fox Searchlight snub her performance because she's a crazy scientologist, or did they just think it sucked so much that they didn't want anyone remembering it?
M&C is speculating that this has something to do with the earlier controversy over one of Katie's sex scenes being mysteriously vanished from the film. They think this is some sort of retribution from Fox.
I'm holding an Oscar screener in my hand right now, and can confirm that yes, she's not listed on the cover under their "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION" heading. Some have claimed that they've listed everyone else who is in the film, but that's just not true. The only female actress listed at all is Maria Bello. Kim Dickens is also absent. Maybe she's a scientologist too.
The long and short of it is that Katie Holmes' part in Thank You For Smoking is a pretty small one. She's barely on screen and when she is she's primarily engaged in fully clothed fucking. Who cares whether or not Fox Searchlight is pushing her for an Oscar? Why the hell WOULD they push her for an Oscar? She's little more than a cameo in the film, and she's not very good the few moments she is on screen. I suspect she's not listed for exactly the same reason Kim Dickens isn't listed: She's barely in the movie.
