Will Smith Can't Replace Tom Cruise

Is there anyone out there anxiously awaiting Tom Cruise's next film role? Well, except for his supposedly super-secret cameo in Tropic Thunder, that is. The former King of Hollywood has been slipping in status lately, and according to some rumors, that might be costing him his role in the political thriller Edwin A. Salt.

But now Moviehole.net is stepping in to say that's simply not true, knocking down rumors that the star of Hancock would step in instead. "Will Smith has not been approached to star. Cruise is the only actor who has been approached.” A "representative of the film" later stepped in to clarify that, in fact, no one is actually officially in the part. "Tom is not set for the film. Cruise has never been officially attached to the project, but will decide on his involvement once the new script is finished. He was previously concerned that the part was too close to his Mission Impossible character."

Frankly, I'm finding it hard to muster up the energy to care. The phrase "political thriller" is so generic that it immediately carries an air of "been there, done that." Unless you're making something innovative on par with The Bourne Identity, these kinds of movies tend to fly right past audiences. And, as has been proven recently, even a Tom Cruise movie can fly under the radar these days. And hey, even if this character is similar to his Mission: Impossible character, it's probably a good thing. It could help us get back to the glory days of Tom's career.
