Tobey Maguire is helping Brown take on the Board of Education. Variety says the former Spider-Man has been attached to The Crusaders, a pending Universal Pictures movie about the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case in 1954.
In the movie, Maguire will play one of the guys who wasn't wearing a pointy, white, hood. He’s Jack Greenberg, an idealistic lawyer just out of law school who joins with the NAACP to help win the landmark Supreme Court case ending segregation in America’s school system. Unfortunately, nothing can end segregation actually inside the schools. Nerds still sit on one side of the cafeteria, and cheerleaders sit on the other. Even the Supreme Court can’t fix that.
If you’re wondering what got Tobey interested in playing a lawyer, look no further than Crusaders director Gary Ross. They’ve worked together on both of Ross’s previous directorial efforts, Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. One good movie out of two isn’t a bad ratio. I’ll leave you to wonder which of those two movies I think is the good one. Here’s a hint: I love Don Knotts.
