According to information just released by the MPAA, Kevin Smith has won his appeal to overturn the NC-17 rating assigned to Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Say hello to a now inevitable hard R, and seeing the movie with all the best bits still intact. Maybe some of the bits and pieces too.
They’ve been hit with controversy from the beginning. I guess you’d have to expect that from a movie with the word “porno” in the title. But the movie’s title is genius, and until we see more of it probably it’s biggest selling point, even if it did make the movie something of a censorship target. Getting slapped with an NC-17 would have prevented the film from getting wide distribution, since many theater chains refuse to show NC-17 movies. Because of that, odds are that The Weinstein Company would have refused to release the film until it was cut down to an R, probably losing something really funny in the process. Now that’s all water under the bridge.
This isn’t the first time Smith has had to take one of his movies through the MPAA’s appeals process, and so far he’s batting a thousand. He’s never lost. With the ratings controversy out of the way, that leaves Zack and Miri Make a Porno on track to hit theaters October 31st and be really really funny. The biggest winners here are me and you.
