It looks like James Cameron has added another face to his big, soon to be mind-blowing next movie Avatar. Actor Wes Studi has announced on his official site that he’s joining the cast.
If you know who Wes Studi is at all, you probably know him as some sort of mystic, wise Indian character. I always remember him as the mysterious Sphinx in Mystery Men. But he’s also the mysterious, random Indian in Seraphim Falls out this month, and he plays a similar character in at least a dozen other movies and television shows including Dances with Wolves, Geronimo, and Last of the Mohicans. Simply put, the guy is seriously typecast.
So if Cameron has hired him, that must mean Avatar needs some sort of mysterious, wise, Indian spirit-guide. Studi doesn’t say what his part will be in the film, but come on, they haven’t hired him to play a hard-nosed cop or a ruthless killer cyborg. Studi has his thing and Cameron needs it.
Already in the cast of Avatar is Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington as the film’s lead Jake Sully, a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival. Expect the film some time in 2009.
