The Oscars are over and the results, are pretty much what everyone thought they would be. The same could be said of the evening’s host, Ellen Degeneres. She turned the ceremony into a bland installment of her daily, soccer mom loved talk show. Was she funny? Rarely. Did she offend anyone? No. Will she be back next year? Let’s hope not.
In awards, Scorsese finally won Best Director. Maybe United 93’s Paul Greengrass deserved it more, but Marty’s been overlooked so many times, he deserves one. His film The Departed also took home three other awards including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Film Editing. As predicted, Helen Mirren took Best Actress and Forest Whittaker walked away with Best Actor. Whittaker, having learned from his stumbling acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, turned in the most eloquent, heartfelt thank you of the event.
Still, the highlight of the evening wasn’t the awards or the host, but a comedy bit put together by Jack Black, Will Ferrell, and John C. Reilly in which they sang about the plight of comedic actors, who never seem to get much love from Oscar for getting laughs. The evening’s only other bright spot was Jerry Seinfeld, who turned the boring presentation of a minor documentary award into a hilarious stand-up comedy routine. Maybe it’s not what he intended, but if Jerry has any interest in hosting the Oscars himself next year, his presentation was a brilliant job application. Academy take note: We want Seinfeld in charge.
Meanwhile, Cinema Blend’s annual Oscar Chat went off without a hitch. It was bigger and better than ever. Over the course of the evening, hundreds took part and somewhere around the time Dreamgirls managed to get shut out of Best Song despite holding three of the possible five nominations we completely lost count. Trivia was played, prizes were handed out, and Oscar Chat 6 was a smash hit.
So let’s put a bow on this whole thing with a look at tonight’s complete list of Oscar Winners. Below you’ll find every category awarded, with the winners in bright red bold:
