Chalking one up for the “think positive” file, Kevin Costner has already agreed to appear in sequels for a movie that no one may want to see. Costner told Entertainment Weekly that he would be willing to do two or more follow-ups for Mr. Brooks, his movie about a normal Portland businessman who happens to be a serial killer on the side. The only problem with Costner’s plan is that the first Mr. Brooks movie isn’t even releasing until June 1, and there isn’t much outcry, at this point, for more.
Costner isn’t the only used to be super-hot actor who hasn’t wowed anyone in a few years appearing in Mr. Brooks. Demi Moore will play the detective tracking Costner’s serial killer. She got involved when Costner gave her boy-toy husband, Aston Kutcher, the script while the two men were filming The Guardian. Joining Costner and Moore will be William Hurt, as Costner’s imaginary friend who encourages him to kill people, and Marg Helenberger, as Costner’s wife who, hopefully, doesn’t.
Costner said he doesn’t normally do sequels. ''When the writers first presented the notion to me” he said, “I said, 'Oh, bulls---! I haven't done Tin Cup 2, or Bull Durham 2, or Open Range: The Early Years, so you don't have to try to hook me with that.” But, of course, in this case, it’s different. After all, Costner says this is “as strong a performance as I've ever given.'' This differs from previous movies where he says things like “boy, I sucked in this thing.” Still, you have to enjoy the chutzpah. The last of his movies that anyone but the most charitable fan would call a big hit was 1992’s The Bodyguard. The idea of Costner as a bad guy is certainly intriguing, but my guess is that Mr. Brooks 2: Brooks Goes to Rio won’t see the light of day.
