In his podcast this week Kevin Smith talked about the new show he’s developing for the CW, and also mentioned that he’s gearing up for the horror movie he’s rumored to be doing. He and Smodcast co-host Scott Moser discussed the possibility of Moser editing this one on his own since as Kevin suggested, this type of film is more Moser’s thing.
Now we have more details on where the film is headed, and what he’s planning to call it too. RottenTomatoes has discovered that the movie will indeed be his next project, and it’s being called Red State.
Smith revealed to RT that Red State is “informed” by a documentary from Louis Theroux about a controversial church group infamous for taking a supremely homophobic stance and for picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. Kevin says, “it's very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It's certainly not Phelps himself but it's very much inspired by a Phelps figure.”
To Smith that’s a horror movie, but he’s not sure if audiences will agree. I wonder if that means it will be a horror movie in the way Jesus Camp was to a lot of people, rather than horror movie as in zombies and serial killers and such?
It’ll probably be able to get more out of him about where it’s going once he actually writes it. He plans to put pen to paper in the next few months and then shoot it later this year. He’s planning another comedy after that, for a winter shoot.
