I’ve been dreading this moment for more than a year now, but it’s nearly time to bite the bullet and get our first look at what Will Smith has done to the once brilliant script for I Am Legend. The guys over at JoBlo have picked up a story from Collider which says the first trailer for the vampire/zombie/whatever it is now movie will be in front of Ocean’s 13.
Legend is a post-apocalyptic film with Will Smith as the last man on an Earth infected by a plague that mutated the planet’s inhabitants into unpleasant things. In the original, awesome, and long since re-written script the world was populated by vampires and the film was a sad and moving tale of loniliness, isolation, and desperation. Three or four re-writes and a Will Smith later it’s hard to know how much, if any of that, is left. The recently released image to your right is actually a positive sign. Maybe they’re on the right track after all.
The trailer will be our first chance to find out what sort of tone they’re going for with it. I’m going to drop my usual sad sack demeaner and hope. Hope they haven’t done what it’s sounded like they’ve done. Hope they’ve kept the essence of what could have been a brilliant film, completely intact. Hope that the trailer shows up online in addition to playing before Ocean’s 13 so I don’t have to sit through another two hours of George Clooney hanging out with his rich, celebrity friends.
