I still think it’s pretty unbelievable that Indiana Jones 4 is coming. I know that, in theory, all the key players are in place and the production is finally starting to move – after all, it has to in order to meet its set May 2008 release date. Still, it just doesn’t feel like an Indiana Jones movie is coming forward.
With the exception of the near-insulting rejection of the Frank Darabont script, nearly everything announced for Indiana Jones 4 has been perfection. Ford’s back, Shia LeBeouf is casting I’m looking forward to, as is Cate Blanchett. But among all the good news there eventually had to be some bad and that’s finally come courtesy of IndianaJones.com. The man in the hat is not bringing his father.
That’s right – Sean Connery is sticking to his retirement plan instead of coming back to take part in the next Indiana Jones Adventure. I find that a bit of a shame – I’d much rather remember old-Connery as Henry Jones then for his part in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Connery’s statement about taking part in the movie:
"I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun. I, do however, have one bit of advice for Junior: Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, 'Break a leg, everyone.' I'll see you on May 22, 2008 at the theater!"
Connery’s announcement is a bit of a bummer, but there is still quite a cast to look forward to: Ford, Blanchett, John Hurt, and Ray Winstone. And hey, at least Indy’s dad will be watching from the audience.
