After a successful second weekend Knocked Up is officially a hit and if you’re like me and you spend your afternoons sitting around thing about movies, you’re probably wondering: “Hey, what’s next for Seth Rogen?”
When Steve Carell worked with Judd Apatow on The 40 Year-Old Virgin it turned him into a highly sought after leading man. It may not be as easy for Rogen. After all, he’s not the traditional, leading man type. Steve is a pretty non-descript guy, plug him in anywhere and he can be funny. Seth Rogen, even though he’s only starred in two movies, is already typecast as your stoner best friend. Unless he plays Chong in a Cheech & Chong remake, that might limit his options.
Luckily for Rogen, he’s in the Judd Apatow family. Literally. The way he talks, it almost sounds like he sleeps in Apatow’s basement. Seth doesn’t have to wait around for Hollywood to get over the typecasting thing and latch on to the Rolling Rogen Railway started with Knocked Up. Apatow is way ahead of everyone and long before Seth got Katherine Heigel pregnant he’d recognized his genius. Whether or not he gets the work he deserves elsewhere, expect him to have a permanent place in the ever expanding Apatow universe.
After a cameo later this year in Superbad, Seth’s next leading role will be alongside fellow Freaks and Geeks alum James Franco in Apatow produced The Pineapple Express. The good news is that everyone’s super-high best friend already the lead in it, and even better it’s in a movie he co-wrote himself. The bad news is that it’s a stoner comedy, sticking Seth even further into that pothead hole.
Here’s the thing: We need more Seth Rogen. Sure he’s great at the pothead thing, but eventually the guy is going to grow out of that and by then, Hollywood needs to have figured out what they have in him. He’s more than a guy with a blunt, he’s a classic everyman. He’s not a perfectly-pretty Hollywood hunk, he’s just like you and me. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’ve had it with Tom Cruise and his pretty boy successors. We don’t need to see Joshua Jackson as Fletch. I’ve seen enough of Matthew Fox. Cut the crap, drop the bong, and give us more Rogen.
